Carinthian suit

The Carinthian suit is a brown traditional costume that was introduced in 1911 in the Austrian state of Carinthia .

In 1911 the Carinthian Landsmannschaft, which had recently been founded, introduced this suit, which was designed by the Villach painter Professor Leopold Resch with reference to older costumes from the Canal Valley . In the same year it was introduced as the official national costume for men by decree of the Carinthian provincial government ; the main aim of this measure was to raise awareness of the country. The suit was presented to the public for the first time at the Landes-Handwerksmesse in 1911.

The Carinthian suit is hazelnut or chestnut brown and has green cuffs; a floral velvet vest is worn. The color brown should symbolize a bond with the earth and home.

In contrast to most other Austrian folk costumes - such as the widespread Styrian suit - the Carinthian suit is sometimes ascribed a political symbolic content; in particular the former governor Jörg Haider often appeared in these clothes; as are the members of the traditional Carinthian associations . More recently, it has been criticized that the state of Carinthia, through Haider's initiative, pays out a subsidy for the purchase of Carinthian suits despite the precarious budget situation.
