Walter Gorrish

Walter Gorrish ( pseudonym for Walter Kaiser , born November 22, 1909 in Barmen , † January 19, 1981 in Berlin ) was a German writer .

Life

Walter Gorrish was the son of a construction worker . After attending primary school in Barmen , he trained as a plasterer and then worked in this profession. In 1928 Gorrish became a member of the Communist Youth Association and from 1931 the KPD . After the Nazis seized power emigrated it in 1933 to the Netherlands , later he went to Belgium and finally to France . From 1936 he took part in the Spanish Civil War as a member of the International Brigades . There he was promoted to officer and was adjutant to Ludwig Renn . After the defeat of the Republican troops, Gorrish was interned in France . When the German Wehrmacht in 1940, invaded, gave the French authorities it to the Third Reich , and he was charged with "conspiracy to treason to three years' imprisonment sentenced . He served this prison term in a penitentiary until 1943 . Then he pulled the Nazis for disciplinary battalion 999 a. During his deployment on the Eastern Front, Gorrish deserted in the Crimea in 1944 and defected to the Red Army .

In 1945 Gorrish returned to Germany and settled in the Soviet occupation zone . From 1945 to 1949 he was an officer in the German People's Police , which he was instrumental in building up. From 1949 he lived as a freelance writer in East Berlin . He had been a member of the SED since 1946 and was a board member of the German Writers' Association .

From 1963 to 1967 he was a candidate for the Central Committee of the SED. Since 1963 he was a member of the solidarity committee for the Spanish people in the GDR .

He found his final resting place in 1981 in a Pankow cemetery .
