Hans Beimler Medal
The Hans Beimler Medal was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated on May 17, 1956 in one step by the Council of Ministers of the GDR . It could only be awarded to individuals who had stood by the International Brigades in the course of the Spanish Civil War (1936 to 1939) , insofar as these had maintained their anti-reactionary and anti-fascist stance during the National Socialist era .
Appearance and wearing style
Consisting of silver existing medal is strongly curved inwards and displays on its obverse centrally the portrait Hans When coupler in uniform Republican. On his head he carries a boat with a stylized red star. His name can be read around the portrait: HANS BEIMLER and under it in the middle his life data: 1895-1936 . The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows the three-pointed star of the international brigades in the middle with the inscription: INTERNATIONAL (above) BRIGADES (below). This is in turn enclosed by the outer inscription: FIGHTER FOR SPANIENS FREIHEIT (above) and 1936-1939 (below). The hallmark 900 has been struck on the edge of the medal. In addition, medals made of silver-plated bronze were also issued, in this case the stamped hallmark is omitted. The medal was worn on a 25 × 14 mm clasp on the upper left side of the chest. The ribbon has a 3 mm wide black, red and gold border on both sides and in the middle the colors of the Spanish republic red, yellow and violet in a horizontal position. The interim brace is of the same quality.
