Heinrich Toeplitz
Heinrich Toeplitz (born June 5, 1914 in Berlin ; † November 22, 1998 there ) was a functionary of the GDR CDU and President of the GDR Supreme Court .
Life
Toeplitz was born the son of a lawyer, attended grammar school , graduated from high school in 1932 and studied law and political science at the universities of Leipzig and Breslau until 1936. In 1937 he received his doctorate. jur., worked in business, at times also abroad and was persecuted in Germany for racist reasons. He was drafted into the Todt Organization, imprisoned in forced labor camps in France and the Netherlands from 1944 to 1945, and returned to Berlin after the end of the war. From 1945 to 1947 he was a trainee lawyer and assistant judge in Berlin, passed the second state examination in law at the Berlin Superior Court in 1947 and was the main legal advisor to the Berlin Magistrate until 1950 . In 1949 he joined the CDU, was Deputy Secretary General of the CDU in 1950 and State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice of the GDR from 1950 to 1960. In this function he was a member of the editorial board of Neue Justiz and he paid tribute to the 15-month management activity of the law professor Hans Nathan in the editor-in-chief of this magazine on the occasion of his departure as editor-in-chief in 1953.
From 1951 to 1989 he was a member of the People's Chamber of the GDR , from 1952 to 1989 a member of the Political Committee and from 1954 a member of the presidium of the CDU main board. From 1966 to 1989 he was deputy chairman of the CDU, from 1955 to 1987 chairman of the central committee of inquiry of the CDU and from 1953 to 1990 co-founder and presidium member of the central management committee of the anti-fascist resistance fighters of the GDR and from 1954 a member of the central council of the Fédération Internationale des Résistants (FIR, Internationale Association of Resistance Fighters ). From 1960 to 1986 he was President of the Supreme Court of the GDR, from 1962 to 1985 President of the Association of Jurists (VdJ) of the GDR and from 1975 to 1990 President of the GDR-Italy Friendship Society. He was also chairman of the GDR committee for the decade of struggle against racism and racial discrimination. From the end of 1989 to 1990 he was chairman of the temporary committee of the People's Chamber of the GDR for the "review of cases of abuse of office, corruption, personal gain and other acts".
Willy Brandt , then Governing Mayor of Berlin, commented in 1962 on the show trial led by Toeplitz against the escape helper Harry Seidel : "There is not a single word that would suffice to express the outrage over this disgraceful judgment of the modern inquisition of an injustice state."
