Ernst Moritz Arndt Medal

The Ernst Moritz Arndt Medal was awarded by the National Council of the National Front of the GDR , which was founded and first awarded in 1955. With her achievements in the struggle to secure peace were recognized. The number of their awards amounted to around 10,000 until 1975, the majority of which went to cultural workers. Well-known recipients of the medal were Johannes R. Becher and Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler , among others . In 1975 the medal was stopped. It was succeeded by the Medal of Honor of the National Front . A distinction is to be made between the Ernst Moritz Arndt badge , which is awarded by the Association of Expellees .

Appearance and wearing style

The obverse of the non-wearable silver medal with a diameter of 44 mm shows the portrait of Ernst Moritz Arndt looking to the left from the observer and his name above it: ERNST MORITZ ARNDT . This portrait is enclosed by a laurel wreath, the lower quarter of which is closed by a lettering band. Until 1970 the embossed two-line inscription: THE WHOLE GERMANY / SHOULD IT SEIN could be read on it. From 1970 the medal then shows a continuous laurel wreath. Until 1959, the medal also had a waving flag ribbon in the colors black-red-gold on its lower edge, which was then removed.
