Carl von Ossietzky Medal (Peace Council of the GDR)
The Carl von Ossietzky Medal was an award given by the German Peace Council (later the Peace Council of the GDR ) since 1963 . It was awarded for services to preserving and securing peace.
The medal was donated on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Carl von Ossietzky on November 25, 1961. Walter Bredendiek submitted the proposal for the foundation during an expanded meeting of the Presidium of the German Peace Council in October 1961. A board of trustees to award the medal was established on January 25, 1963. The first solemn award of the medal took place on May 4, 1963, the 25th anniversary of Ossietzky's death, in the Apollo Hall of the German State Opera in Berlin. The day before, the President of the German Peace Council, Walter Friedrich , received the first medal at the 23rd plenary meeting of the German Peace Council. As a result, the medal was awarded during celebrations on Ossietzky's birthday in October, and also on occasions such as the honorees' birthdays.
