Peter Edel

Peter Edel (actually Peter Hirschweh ; born July 12, 1921 in Berlin ; † May 7, 1983 in East Berlin ) was a German graphic artist and writer. He is the grandson of the illustrator and writer Edmund Edel .

Life

Edel was the son of a Jewish businessman and great-grandson of the psychiatrist Karl Edel . Due to the National Socialist racial laws in 1938 he had to break off the high school and completed an apprenticeship as a painter and graphic artist at the Hausdorf private school and illegally with Käthe Kollwitz until 1940 . Until 1943 he did forced labor . He was taken into “ protective custody ” in 1943 and was then imprisoned due to “alien art activity and dissemination of anti-imperial writings” . a. in the concentration camp Auschwitz , Sachsenhausen (January 1944 to February 1945) and Mauthausen , where numerous drawings were made. He was one of the prisoners who were forced to forge English pound notes as part of Operation Bernhard . Edel experienced the liberation in the Ebensee concentration camp , a satellite camp of the Mauthausen concentration camp .

From 1945 to 1947 he lived as a writer, painter and book illustrator in Bad Ischl , after which he initially returned to West Berlin and moved to East Berlin in 1949 . From 1947 to 1951 he worked for the magazine “ Die Weltbühne ”, then culture editor for “ BZ am Abend ”. He was a member of the SED and the central management of the committee of anti-fascist resistance fighters. Since 1964 he lived as a freelance writer. In 1972 he became a member of the PEN Center of the GDR and in 1978 a board member of the German Writers' Association . Since 1978 he was recorded by the Ministry for State Security as an unofficial employee (IMS "Thomas").

His urn was in the grave conditioning Pergolenweg the memorial of the socialists at the Berlin Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde buried.

Honors

  • A street in Berlin-Hellersdorf has been named after Peter Edel since 1986, which leads from Neue Grottkauer Strasse to Erich-Kästner-Strasse.
  • In Berlin-Weißensee, the Kreiskulturhaus at Berliner Allee 125 was named after Peter Edel; it stood empty since December 2009 and has been renovated since the end of 2017.
