1943: The Schattmann family (Erich, his wife Grete, Frank, their son, Esther, Frank's wife) meet up with their friends on Fridays as always. a. with Bernhard Marcus, a medical adviser, Fritz, his son, Julius Flatau, an antique dealer, Jakob Dankowitz, a pianist, Leon Schapiro and Arnold Gerson. This time Marcus has to say goodbye, his deportation is imminent. Frank and Esther are becoming more and more convinced that waiting is of no use. They join the active resistance of a communist group, which also includes Helmut Wall, Harry Kornbund and the Russian Bolkowski. They sabotage the work in their armaments factory, distribute leaflets and listen to the " enemy radio station ". But the deportations continue: Schapiro, Gerson, Dankowitz ... When Erich met the same fate, his wife Grete did not survive. Esther has also disappeared. Before Frank can escape, he is arrested, as are Helmut, Harry and Bolkowski. Frank is sent to Auschwitz. Here he sees Esther for the last time. His fellow inmates encourage him to paint and smuggle his pictures outside.

After the war, Frank tries in vain to find his friends again. Only Helmut survived, as did Martin, his friend from school, who believed the Nazi slogans and turned away from them. Jakob Dankowitz, now based in London, tries to come to terms with the past by making a trip to Munich, where he meets one of the Gestapo torturers who is back in office and dignity.
