The history of the Kreiskulturhaus goes back to the 19th century. In 1885 the innkeeper and brewer Rudolf Sternecker set up a brewery on the property at today's Berliner Allee. On the park grounds with the castle Weissensee Rudolf Stern Ecker established the world-Etablissement Schloss Weissensee . In 1892, the brewery property on what was then König-Chaussee No. 5 became the property of the brewer Gustav Enders . According to a report in the Teltower Kreisblatt in 1893, bankruptcy proceedings were opened against Sternecker's assets. After this procedure was opened, Sternecker was on the run.

The major extensions to the building complex go back to Gustav Enders. In 1902 he submitted a building application for the Great Hall to the mayor Heinrich Feldtmann. In 1908 the small hall was completed as a link between the restoration and the great hall. The original files on the property are in the building files archive of the Pankow district office. The lead architect for Enders' projects was Max Bing. Bing worked u. a. also for the councilor of commerce and factory owner Theodor Hildebrand , who founded the chocolate factory Theodor Hildebrand & Sohn : His order was for a commercial building in what was then Berlin's Kronenstrasse 17, which was destroyed in World War II.

From its inception to the present day, the building has had a very varied history of use. From 1927, for example, the large hall of the house served as a cinema. The Lichtspiele Schloss Weißensee opened this year and continued to operate until the 1950s. After the end of the Second World War , a people's house was set up in the old wing of the building in 1946 under the Soviet city command.

From 1962, the Volkshaus developed into the Weißensee District Culture House as part of a renovation.

In 1984 the name was changed. The Kreiskulturhaus was given the name of the German graphic designer and writer Peter Edel (1921–1983). In the meantime, the address of the property has also changed. The former address "König-Chaussee 5" was now called "Klement-Gottwald-Allee 125", and from 1991 it was renamed Berliner Allee 125.

In 2007, the cultural center initially closed its doors. The cultural office tried to agree on a subsequent use. The building was put out to tender, and the Gesellschaft für Stadtentwicklung GmbH in partnership with the Berlin School for Drama, which has meanwhile used the site , showed particular interest . In 2012, a leasehold contract was signed between the new interested parties and the district office. However, the hope for funding for the renovation could not be fulfilled, so that the Berlin School for Drama withdrew from the project.

The naming of the house should be revised around the turn of the millennium. On September 13, 2000, the Weißensee district council assembly passed the resolution that the name should be changed to "Weißensee", since files of the GDR Ministry for State Security (MfS) indicated that Edel had been listed there as an informal employee (IM) . A citizens' initiative, as well as a complaint by the PDS, opposed it, since a renaming would represent an "encouragement for neo-fascist forces". A renaming did not take place subsequently.

The vacant building was used by the Wallywoods artist collective from 2007-2010 . Cultural organizer and gallery owner Paul Woods worked there together with ten artists from ten countries.

After negotiations in 2016, the non-profit educational institution Kommunales Bildungswerk e. V. the building complex with the aim of establishing an educational and cultural center in Weißensee. The building permit was granted on February 23, 2018.

Redevelopment

The northeast corner area of the two-story extension from the 1980s was dismantled as part of the renovation after 2017. The listed Great Hall will be restored according to its historical character. An atrium was also installed on the first floor of the old wing. Three painted wall panels from the Wallywoods period have been preserved and will be exhibited in the foyer in the future.

In addition to the educational activities of the sponsoring association, the house is also to be available for cultural, social and neighborhood activities in the future. A gastronomic offer will also be created on the ground floor of the building.
