Paul change
Paul Wandel (born February 16, 1905 in Mannheim ; † June 3, 1995 in Berlin ) was a German communist politician and the first minister for public education of the German Democratic Republic (GDR).
Life
From 1919, Wandel completed an apprenticeship as a machine technician and was a technician in a Mannheim company from 1925 to 1929. In 1919 he joined the Socialist Workers' Youth , in 1923 the Communist Youth Association of Germany and in 1926 the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). In 1930 and 1931 he was secretary of the KPD district leadership in Baden and from 1930 to 1932 chairman of the KPD parliamentary group in the Mannheim city council .
From 1931 to 1936 he was a student , aspirant and then teacher and party secretary of the Lenin School in Moscow . He became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). He worked at the Marx-Engels Institute and as Wilhelm Pieck's personal secretary in the Balkan countries department of the Executive Committee of the Communist International . From 1941 he was head of the German section at the school of the Communist International in Kuschnarenkowo and from 1943 a member of the KPD's foreign office in Moscow.
From 1945 to 1949, Wandel was President of the German Central Administration for National Education and worked there with reform pedagogues such as Erwin Marquardt , Heinrich Deiters , Leo Regener and Paul Oestreich . He had been a member of the party executive committee or central committee of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) since 1946. In 1949 and 1950 and from 1954 to 1958 he was a member of the People's Chamber of the GDR. From 1949 to 1952, Wandel was the first minister for popular education in the GDR, from 1953 to 1957 he was secretary for culture and education of the Central Committee of the SED. He was also a member of the National Council of the National Front of the GDR and a member of the Presidium of the Peace Council of the GDR .
At the end of 1957 he received a severe reprimand for reform pedagogical tendencies in the school system and insufficient severity in the implementation of the SED's cultural-political line and was released from his position as secretary of the Central Committee. From 1958 to 1961 he was the GDR's ambassador to the People's Republic of China and then until 1964 Deputy Foreign Minister of the GDR. From January 10, 1964 to November 1, 1976 he served as president and until 1984 as vice-president of the League for Friendship of Nations . From 1982 to 1989 he was chairman of the GDR – PR China friendship committee.
After 1989 he belonged to the PDS and was a member of their council of the elderly .
Wandel was buried in the Pankower Friedhof III in Berlin.
Awards
Wandel received the Patriotic Order of Merit in Gold in 1955 , the Star of Friendship of Nations in 1970 , the Karl Marx Order in 1975 and the Medal of Honor for the Patriotic Order of Merit in Gold in 1980.
