Helmut Liebermann

Helmut Liebermann (born October 31, 1923 in Niederfrohna , Saxony , † December 15, 2013 ) was a German diplomat . He was the GDR's ambassador to the People's Republic of China .

Life

Liebermann was born the son of a worker. After attending elementary and middle school, he completed an apprenticeship as a photographer. In 1942 he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service , after which he worked as a photo assistant.

He became a member of the KPD in 1945 and a member of the SED in 1946 . From 1948 he worked as a self-employed photo master. From 1951 to 1954 he completed an interpreting course at the Pedagogical Institute in Leipzig .

From June 1954 he was an employee of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the GDR (MfAA). Until 1958 he worked as an interpreter and attaché at the GDR embassy in Beijing . 1958/59 he worked as a senior consultant in the Far East Department of the MfAA. In 1960/61 he studied at the Humboldt University in Berlin with a degree in sinology . In 1961/62 he was the main consultant in the Far East Department at the MfAA. From 1962 he acted as second secretary, from 1963 as first secretary and from 1964 to 1966 as counselor at the GDR embassy in Beijing. From 1966 he was deputy and from 1973 head of the Far East department at the MfAA. From January 1976 to April 1982 he was the GDR's ambassador to the PR China. He then worked again as deputy head of the Far East department in the MfAA.
