Rolf Berthold
Rolf Berthold (born August 4, 1938 in Chemnitz ; † December 3, 2018 in Berlin ) was a diplomat of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). He was the GDR's ambassador to the People's Republic of China and Vietnam .
Life
After studying at the Institute for International Relations in Beijing from 1956 to 1961 and at the Academy for Political Science and Law of the GDR in Potsdam-Babelsberg , he worked from 1962 to 1990 in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR . After working as Section Head China and Section Head Vietnam, he became head of the Far East Department. He worked in the embassies of the GDR in the People's Republic of China and in Vietnam. From 1982 to 1990 he was the GDR's ambassador to the People's Republic of China and Vietnam. He was an eyewitness to the 1989 Tiananmen massacre in Beijing.
After the reunification and peaceful revolution in the GDR , Berthold accompanied travel groups and gave lectures. Berthold has been chairman of the association that publishes the monthly RotFuchs since 2005 and also published there. In public events he gave lectures about his work as China ambassador and about developments in the country. Rolf Berthold lived in Berlin.
In 1973 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze and in 1988 in silver.
