Günther Fuchs (historian)

Günther Fuchs (* 1939 ) is a German historian and university professor. In 1989 he was briefly Minister for Popular Education in the GDR .

Life

Fuchs received his doctorate in 1968 from the Karl Liebknecht University of Education ( PH Potsdam ). After his habilitation , he was appointed full professor and later also prorector . Since 1986 he has been Deputy Minister for Popular Education. On November 2, 1989, Minister Margot Honecker resigned from office and Fuchs was acting minister for two weeks. On November 5, he announced the suspension of military instruction, which had been a compulsory subject since 1978 for all pupils in the 9th and 10th grades of the polytechnic (POS) and advanced high schools (EOS) in the GDR.

On November 18, 1989, Hans-Heinz Emons was appointed the new Minister for Education and Youth of the GDR by the Modrow government .

Fuchs was a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED).
