Isabelle Blume (born Isabelle Rachel Grégoire ); (* May 22, 1892 in Baudour / Borinage ; † March 12, 1975 ) was a Belgian socialist politician , resistance fighter and president of the World Peace Council .

Life

Isabelle Grégoire was the daughter of a progressive Protestant pastor . After attending primary school , she attended a teacher training institute , which she left in 1911 when she obtained her diploma . She then completed a theological training in Geneva . In 1913 she married the Protestant pastor David Blume. They went to Brussels , where she attended a workers' college, which opened the doors for her to participate in the socialist movement. She developed into a feminist and anti-fascist and joined the Belgian Workers' Party in 1928 . At the same time she became secretary of the socialist women's movement . She was committed to women's suffrage . In 1936 she was elected as a member of the European Parliament in Brussels. From 1936 to 1954, Blume was a member of the BWP in Brussel-Halle-Vilvoorde .

Contrary to the official policy of neutrality of Belgium she performed for the creation of a popular front , which the Republican Spain should come to the rescue. When the German Wehrmacht invaded in 1940, she fled to London . During the war she worked as a secretary in the Royal Navy under the direction of Camille Huysmans . After the overthrow of Hitler's Germany , she campaigned against the division of the world into two warring state blocs.

After joining the World Peace Council, which was under Soviet influence and headed by communist intellectuals , she was expelled from the Belgian Socialist Party in 1951. Since then she has held her parliamentary seat as a non-party member. In 1953 she was awarded the Stalin Peace Prize by the government of the USSR . After the PSB refused to accept her back into the party, she entered the Communist Party's lists as a candidate and joined it.

In 1965 she joined the World Peace Council and was one of its co-presidents from 1965 to 1966. She was elected president from 1966 to 1969. In this role she had the opportunity to meet prominent politicians and personalities of the 20th century, including a. with Jawaharlal Nehru , Indira Gandhi , Mao Zedong , Gamal Abdel Nasser , Anwar as-Sadat , Ho Chi Minh and Salvador Allende Gossens .

From 1965 to 1970 she sat for the communists on the municipal council of her town Hornu .

In 1968, when she spoke out in favor of the withdrawal of Soviet intervention troops from Czechoslovakia , she resigned from the office of president at the WFR. There was initially no successor. One of the remaining co-presidents, Romesh Chandra , did not succeed her until 1977.

Isabelle Blume was the mother of Johannes Blume. Her other children were Edith and Alain Goldschlager Blume, a colonel in the Belgian Air Force . She is also the grandmother of Alain Goldschlager.
