The term resistance fighter refers to one or more people who are usually collectively involved in resistance movements against a certain, mostly political power. These can be governments , colonial powers , aggressors , occupying powers or, in general, foreign military , security and police forces and other armed groups such as the national guard , land or vigilante groups .

The resistance struggle can be non-violent , passive , militant or armed. If the actions of a resistance fighter are directed against things, one also speaks of sabotage .

The transition from civil disobedience to militant resistance is fluid, as militancy is usually understood to mean the deliberate breaking of laws.

The highest level of escalation of the militant resistance is the armed resistance . Resistance fighters are often revered by the people, especially when they have overthrown or fought against a hated regime. On the other hand, there are also people who call themselves resistance fighters, but are rejected by the majority of the population.

Most of the time, resistance fighters are not members of regular armies . Own and external names are often biased.
