Erich Tamm

Erich Tamm (born March 8, 1911 in Berlin ; † May 24, 1988 ) was a German politician ( KPD / SED ) and resistance fighter . He was instrumental in building up the people's book trade in the GDR and headed the Berlin book trade company.

Life

Tamm worked as a machine worker and trader. In 1925 he joined the Communist Youth Association of Germany , the Red Young Storm and the German Metalworkers Association . In 1929 he became a member of the KPD as well as the KPD-affiliated organizations Red Aid Germany , International Workers Aid , Revolutionary Trade Union Opposition and the Association of Proletarian Freethinkers .

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists in 1933, Tamm belonged to the communist resistance. He was arrested and imprisoned in Brandenburg prison. During the Second World War he had to do military service in the Penal Battalion 999 .

After returning from captivity, Tamm joined the SED and was actively involved in building up and developing the people's book trade in the GDR. From 1954 he was head of the Berlin book trade company and director of the Berlin Karl Marx book store. He was also a member of the board of directors of the German Booksellers Association in Leipzig.

From 1958 to 1963 he was a candidate, then a member of the Central Revision Commission of the SED.
