Götz R. Richter

Götz Rudolf Richter , known as Götz R. Richter (born August 1, 1923 in Kleinröhrsdorf / Saxony , † September 2016 in Bad Saarow ), was a German writer .

Life

Götz Rudolf Richter came from a working class family. He went to the merchant navy as a cabin boy in 1937 and made three trips to Africa . From 1939 to 1941 he worked in the chemical industry . In 1941 he volunteered for the Navy and took part in the Second World War until 1945 . From 1945 to 1948 he worked in agriculture , tried his hand at working as a freelance painter and trained as a teacher . He then worked in this profession until 1955. Since then, Richter has been a freelance writer .

Literary work

Richter began in the late 1940s with writing short stories and reportage , the first in East Germany - magazines published. Later, as a writer of novels and short stories, he was an important representative of the adventure genre within GDR literature . His books, which were intended as a socialist alternative to the works of “ imperialist ” authors like Karl May and were intended primarily for children and young people, are often about seafaring and Africa.

Richter became best known for his "Savvy" trilogy, illustrated by Kurt Zimmermann (consisting of the volumes Savvy, the Rice Shopper , The Cave of the Flying Devils and Drums of Freedom ), in which the development of a West African country from the status of a colonial object of exploitation until the armed uprising against the colonial regime is depicted.

Richter had been a member of the GDR Writers' Association since 1956 . He belonged to the SED and represented it as a member of the district assembly of the Frankfurt (Oder) district .
