Walter Tille

Walter Tille (born October 6, 1906 in Crimmitschau ; † April 12, 1986 in Berlin ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( SPD / KPD / SED ). He was chairman of the industrial union Bau-Holz in the Free German Trade Union Confederation (FDGB) and President of the International Federation of Workers' Unions in the Construction, Wood and Building Materials Industry in the World Trade Union Confederation (WGB).

Life

Tille, son of a weaver , attended elementary and trade school , learned the trade of bricklayer and went on a hike . In 1921 he joined the Socialist Workers' Youth and in 1923 the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). He was also a member of the German Construction Workers' Association since 1921. Tille worked as a bricklayer or bricklayer foreman until 1933. Between 1929 and 1932 he was imprisoned several times for political reasons. Through his fearless advocacy for the interests of his professional colleagues, Tille earned their trust. They elected him as a building delegate and to the board of the German Building Trade Association in Crimmitschau.

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists in 1933, he resisted and emigrated to Czechoslovakia , facing imminent arrest . In 1934 he returned to Germany, was taken into “ protective custody ” and, after his release in August 1935, continued to be under police supervision. From 1935 to 1940 he worked as a bricklayer again. In 1940 he was drafted into the army for military service. Interned in Norway , he fled to Germany in 1945.

In 1945 he joined the FDGB and the KPD, in 1946 he became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). He headed the commission for the expropriation of war criminals and Nazi activists in Crimmitschau, where he was a city councilor and a member of the SED city leadership. From 1947 he worked as a trustee and manager of an expropriated construction company, from 1949 as operations manager in the Crimmitschau municipal utility company, building construction and civil engineering department. Here he developed the "Tillesche Ecklehre", a method for faster and cheaper walling of door and window openings. From 1951 he was works director of the VEB Bau-Union in Eisenach and from 1952 in Brandenburg .

From October 1953 to September 1958 he was chairman of the central board of the industrial union (IG) Bau-Holz, then from 1958 to 1962 secretary of the FDGB federal board and member of its executive committee. From 1954 to 1963 he was a member of the FDGB parliamentary group, a member of the People's Chamber and a member of the committee for economic and financial issues. From 1957 to 1960 Tille was also President of the International Federation of Workers' Unions in the Building, Timber and Building Materials Industry in the WGB. He had been a member of its administrative committee since 1953. From 1958 to 1963 Tille was a member of the Central Committee of the SED .

Later he was deputy director of the Institute for Innovation and Director of the Innovation Center for Construction. From 1967 he was chairman of the working group of Honored Union Veterans at the central board of IG Bau-Holz. Tille was a member of the central board of IG Bau-Holz until his death on April 12, 1986.

Tille is buried in the Friedrichsfelde central cemetery.
