Hans Standhardt (* February 21, 1928 in Magdeburg ; † February 22, 2017 there ) was an important engine developer of medium- speed 4- stroke diesel engines and until 1992 chief designer of the SKL Magdeburg .

Life

After the end of the war, Hans Standhardt learned that he was still an anti-aircraft helper (Luftwaffe Oberhelfer in the 2nd Heavy Flak Division 495 and the Heavy Flak Battery 205/3, worker in Division 1/132 of the Reich Labor Service, Panzer Grenadier in the Panzer Grenadier Replacement Battalion 73 and English captivity in Lauenburg and Munsterlager), the job of a car mechanic (engine fitter at BMW and DERUNAPHT (German-Russian Naphta Aktiengesellschaft) in Magdeburg). He exercised this until 1951.

After his delegation to study, which he completed from 1951 to 1954 at the State Engineering School Magdeburg as well as some internships (test bench driver in steam engine construction of the SKL and as a technical draftsman in the design office for diesel engines of the SKL), he began his work in the design office "diesel engines" of the SKL in 1954 Magdeburg.

First he dealt with torsional vibration problems. With the formation of the Leit-BEK "Dieselmotoren" in Magdeburg, he had the opportunity to find out about the state of the art in the field of the development of highly charged 4-stroke engines. The first patent applications from this period were used between 1957 and 1963 in the development of the GDR's first highly charged 4-stroke diesel engine. The test model of this engine was built and tested and showed excellent results, but concerns of the traditional SKL engine customers prevented the start of production at the time.

The development of the type series VD26 / 20, which began under his leadership in 1964, led to the transfer of this type series of the 3rd generation of engines to the SKL production program from 1969. 3000 built motors of this type series, used as ship main and auxiliary motors as well as in generator operation, provide their service on cargo ships and fishing vessels as well as in electric shore stations.

After the formation of the SKL combine, he was responsible for the construction of the 12 VD48 / 42AL-2, the largest 4-stroke diesel engine developed in the RGW ( Council for Mutual Economic Aid) until 1989 , and the development with the start of production in 1975 in the VEB Mechanical engineering in Halberstadt completed. The subsequent development of the VDS24 / 24AL series from 1978, which was part of the SKL Magdeburg production program from 1985, was an obvious decision based on the experience carriers. He introduced a number of new design solutions, most of which were confirmed as patents, particularly on the VDS24 / 24.

In 1979 he was appointed "Senior Engineer" and in 1987 the academic degree "Diplom-Ingenieur" from the Technical University of Magdeburg "Otto von Guericke" was awarded due to outstanding constructive and inventive achievements with the final grade "very good"

For many years he was head of the technical sub-committee for construction at the SKL, in which the chief designers of the combine companies regularly exchanged their experiences.

41 engine designs, 138 patent applications (45 of them abroad), which were created by himself or with his significant involvement, have become common property of national and international engine construction over the years, including through a series of publications in international specialist journals.

In 1995 he worked as a freelance development manager for gas engines at the Elbe plant in Roßlau (Elbe) . From 1995 to 2000 and 2007 to 2012 he was a freelance development manager for diesel-gas engines and heavy oil engines at Maschinenbau Halberstadt GmbH. From 2000 to 2014 he designed a new family of engines (11 series) with VVT ( variable valve control ), bore diameters 160–640 mm, among others .

He provided his extensive expertise in the field of engine development as a consultant until 2014.

family

Hans Standhardt was married and had two sons.

Awards

As a non-party, his committed work in the GDR was recognized by being awarded the GDR Medal of Merit (1974), the Award as Merited Inventor (1974) and the Award Banner of Labor , Level II (1975). Furthermore the gold medal ( Leipziger Messe 1973, 1987) for the 6 VD 26/20 AL2 and VDS 48/42.
