Origin and youth

Antoine Griezmann was born in 1991 in Mâcon in Burgundy , the second of three children of three children to a city employee and a nurse , and grew up there in modest circumstances with his three years older sister and five years younger brother. Griezmann's ancestors on his father's side come from the Hessian Münster , which is where his German surname comes from; his mother is the daughter of Portuguese immigrants who fled to France in 1957 before the Estado Novo regime of the Portuguese dictator António de Oliveira Salazar . Griezmann's maternal grandfather, Amaro Lopes , was a defender at FC Paços de Ferreira in Portugal .

Griezmann started playing football in his native Mâcon. In 1997 he joined the EC Mâcon and in 1999 the UF Mâcon . His father, who himself coached UFM teams, called on several French clubs to enable Antoine to be admitted to their youth development center, but had neither at Olympique Lyon nor at AJ Auxerre , FC Metz , HSC Montpellier , FC Sochaux or the AS Saint-Étienne success. His technical skills were recognized everywhere, but Antoine was considered too small and too thin.

Breakthrough at Real Sociedad

In 2005, the French scout Eric Olhats became aware of the 14-year-old Griezmann at a C-youth tournament and referred him to the Spanish club Real Sociedad San Sebastián , which invited him to Spain for a trial session . Griezmann convinced and stayed with the Basque club's offspring . The first years after his move to Real Sociedad he lived with his discoverer Olhats, who had taken him in, in the city of Bayonne in the French part of the Basque Country and drove every day to the city 50 kilometers away across the border into Spain for training . In San Sebastián he rose to the first team after a few missions in the second division season 2009/10 .

At the end of the season there was promotion to the Primera División . In his first season, Griezmann made 39 appearances, but rarely played over 90 minutes. In early November 2012, Griezmann was suspended by the French Football Association until December 31, 2013. The reason was an unauthorized leaving of the U21 training camp in Le Havre in October 2012 with some teammates, including Yann M'Vila and Wissam Ben Yedder , and a nightclub visit in Paris that night. The U21s then failed in the playoffs of qualifying for the U21 European Championship 2013 in Israel to Norway .

The final against Portugal was lost 0-1 . With six goals, Griezmann was the top scorer of this European Championship and was awarded the Golden Shoe , and he was also elected to the team of the tournament .

At this final round, several French and foreign specialist journalists gave him the wordplay nickname "Grizou", based on the nickname "Zizou" of the French football legend Zinédine Zidane , because he had developed into the main force of the national team. The L'Équipe wrote:

"The French team is in the final of the European Championship like the Platini generation in 1984, like the Zidane generation in 2000, and you don't have to work too hard to give them a name now: Antoine Griezmann."

Griezmann took part in the 2018 World Cup with the national team. In the opening game, the 2-1 win against Australia , he scored the 1-0 goal with a penalty. In the last sixteen he scored again with a penalty in a 4-3 win against Argentina . He then scored in the quarter-finals against Uruguay to make it 2-0.
