France's footballer of the year

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The French Footballer of the Year ("Joueur français de l'année") has been elected every calendar year since 1965 under the direction of the specialist magazine France Football . Thierry Henry (five times), Alain Giresse , Franck Ribéry and Karim Benzema (three times each) were able to win this award most often.

Up to and including 1995, only players with French citizenship playing in the country's professional leagues were eligible. Since then, French players who play in foreign leagues can also be chosen - which mostly happens. Thus, the newspaper followed the development that only relatively few players of the Equipe tricolore compete for clubs in the domestic league.

Until 2001, the election was made by the editors of France Football , today the selection committee consists instead of all former award winners (see below); in addition there is the editor-in-chief of the magazine. For the first time in 2007, the judges received a 25-player list of candidates from the editors, from which they had to make their choice. They recently awarded six (previously: five) points for their favorite, four for what they think was the second, three for the third, two for the fourth and one for the fifth best player.

This title should not be confused with the Étoile d'Or ("Golden Star"), which France Football also awards, but according to different criteria: This second award, introduced in 1956/57, is given to the player in France who in the sum of his Individual ratings (nowadays 0 to 10 stars) on every game day of Ligue 1 over the entire season has the best overall rating. The Étoile d'Or has been differentiating between goalkeepers and field players since the 1992/93 season .

The 2019 election

The voting members of the jury voted last year's winner Kylian Mbappé again as French footballer of the year.

Previous French Footballer of the Year

The winners of the seasons 1956/57 up to and including 1963/64 are actually the winners of the Étoile d'or (see above). The magazine also counts her as French Footballer of the Year and lets her vote on her successor - with the exception of the very first winner, because he was Dutch.

Players in italics are no longer alive.
