Jean Amadou Tigana (born June 23, 1955 in Bamako , Mali ) is a former French football player and current coach . Most recently he was the coach of Shanghai Shenhua .

Tigana experienced his most successful time as a player with Girondins Bordeaux and in the early 1980s with the French national team . The technically exceptionally well-trained and strong midfielder was referred to as the "man with the three lungs".

Club career

Having grown up in Marseille since the age of three , he began his playing career at the amateur club Club des Caillols (where Éric Cantona later learned to play football); at 20 he received his first professional contract with SC Toulon (1975-1988). From there, Aimé Jacquet brought him to Olympique Lyon , where Tigana played until 1981. He then spent his most successful time at Girondins Bordeaux (until 1989). For the last station of his career, he played two years at Olympique Marseille . There he ended his career in 1991, shortly before his 36th birthday.

This football-loving and talented Tigana initially worked as a postman and in a pasta factory as a teenager. At the age of 20 he signed an amateur contract with SC Toulon in France's second division . Tigana was mostly dissatisfied with his own performance and considered giving up the sport. During this phase, Aimé Jacquet , coach of the first division club Olympique Lyon, discovered him and brought Tigana to this club. The technically well-versed midfielder experienced a great sporting upswing in Lyon that he himself no longer believed in. Soon he was the team's top performer. When in the summer of 1981 coach and supporter Jacquet was hired as a coach of Girondins Bordeaux, Tigana followed him directly and also moved to the first division.

Jacquet formed Bordeaux into one of the best club teams in French football. With players like Alain Giresse , Patrick Battiston , Bernard Lacombe and Gernot Rohr , Tigana won several titles: three times French champion (1984, 1985, 1987) and twice cup winners (1986 and 1987). Tigana had a particularly good understanding of the game with Alain Giresse and formed the team's midfield axis with him. The strong running Tigana was one of the most effective players on his team, as he moved superbly even without the ball and usually attracted several opposing players. Tigana played very effectively in the defensive midfield and secured the attacking actions of their own team to the rear; He also gave decisive impulses to the attacking game.

In 1989 Tigana moved to Olympique Marseille . In her mid-thirties, Tigana was also a regular here and won two more championships (1990 and 1991) before ending his career in the summer of 1991 at the age of 36. Shortly before, he lost to Marseille in the final of the European Cup against Red Star Belgrade on penalties.

Career in the national team

Tigana made his debut in the French national team at the age of almost 25 .

In 1982 national coach Michel Hidalgo nominated him for the World Cup in Spain . At first he was only intended as a substitute, but he earned a regular place in the course of the tournament. In the game against Austria (1-0) he played a very good game, substituting for the injured superstar Michel Platini . In the semi-finals he met Germany and lost the game ( night of Seville ) in a dramatic game on penalties (4-5 ). In the game that was then played for third place, Tigana and his team lost to Poland .

Two years later, the French national team les Bleus became European champions in their own country . The outstanding actor was Michel Platini , who scored nine of France's 14 goals. The midfield axis around Platini, Alain Giresse , Luis Fernández and Tigana (the “magic square”) also stood out. With a high willingness to run, Tigana was more involved in the defensive than before, so that the offensive players Giresse and Platini could play to their strengths. It was then voted France's Footballer of the Year . In the election for European Footballer of the Year , he finished second behind compatriot Platini.

At his second World Cup ( Mexico 1986), Tigana finally stepped “out of the shadow of Platini” - as the French press noted. In the group game against Hungary (3-0) Tigana scored his first and only goal in the national jersey (in the 42nd international match). Tigana played a good tournament and became the outstanding player on his team. In the semifinals he met Germany like four years earlier . The game was lost 2-0. After defeating Belgium (4: 2 a. V.) in the game for third place Tigana initially wanted to end his career in the Equipe Tricolore , but played another year for the selection until June 1987. He then focused on his club career .

Career as a coach

From 1993 Tigana coached the first team of Olympique Lyon for two years. So he worked for the team where he made his breakthrough as a professional footballer.

In 1995 he took over AS Monaco and became French champions in 1997 with the team, with players like David Trezeguet , Thierry Henry and Fabien Barthez , who became world champions in 1998 . Tigana was voted "Trainer of the Year" . In the Champions League they failed in the semi-finals at Juventus Turin . In 1999 he resigned from the Monegasque .

Fifteen months later, he accepted an offer from second-rate London club Fulham , financed by Harrods owner Mohamed Al-Fayed . In the first year Tigana managed to lead the club in the Premier League ; in the following years he could not meet the high expectations of the club owner. In April 2003, he was released by Al-Fayed.

From the 2005/06 season Tigana coached the multiple Turkish champions Beşiktaş Istanbul . With Beşiktaş he won the Turkish Cup, the Turkish Super Cup in 2006 and was third in the first division. In the 2006/2007 season he was released two game days before the end of the season. He was previously with the team that was in second place in the table, cup winners.

For the 2010/11 season Tigana was the new coach at Girondins Bordeaux . On May 7, 2011, he resigned after a 4-0 defeat against FC Sochaux because his 16-year-old daughter was repeatedly insulted by his own fans.

In 2012 Tigana signed with Shanghai Shenhua in China, where he was dismissed after 5 games in which he scored 5 points.
