Tilly-sur-Seulles is a French commune , in the department of Calvados and the region Normandy is. It belongs to the Arrondissement of Bayeux and the canton of Bretteville-l'Orgueilleuse . The place has 1700 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). Mayor ( Maire ) is Olivier Quesnot. The inhabitants call themselves Tillois .
geography
Tilly-sur-Seulles is about 15 kilometers west of Caen at an altitude between 44 and 122 m above sea level, the mean height is 70 m . The municipality covers 8.89 km². Neighboring municipalities are Juvigny-sur-Seulles, Bucéels, Fontenay-le-Pesnel and Hottot-les-Bagues. The city lies on the banks of the Seulles .
The area around Tilly-sur-Seulles contains very clayey soils, so there are many well-preserved finds from prehistoric times.
history
The first settlement was in the Gallic-Roman period. This was established through finds of stones and axes from this period. The place name could therefore be traced back to Tilliatum or Tillicium . There are said to have been a total of three Roman roads in the municipality, but no remains of these roads have yet been found, so the exact location is not known.
Tilly-sur-Seulles was very badly damaged in the Battle of Caen in July 1944 during World War II . Over 70% of all houses were destroyed. During the fighting, the place changed hands a total of 23 times. Two British cemeteries with a total of 1,224 graves of fallen soldiers still bear witness to the severity of the fighting.

Buildings and sights
One of the sights is the Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre , whose nave dates back to the 12th century. The church was renovated in the 18th century. It is under monument protection as a monument historique . There is also the Romanesque chapel Notre-Dame-du-Val. The chapel was badly damaged during the fighting in 1944. Today there is a museum about the fighting there.
The civil structures include a medieval multi-arched bridge - also a monument historique - and the remains of a castle from the 18th century.
Transport links
Tilly-sur-Seulles is accessed by the departmental roads D 6 and D 13. The D9 runs about one kilometer south past the town. The nearest train station is in Caen.
