geography
Isigny-sur-Mer is located around 25 kilometers north of Saint-Lô , in the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Regional Nature Park , on the border with the neighboring department of Manche , on the Baie des Veys .
The river Vire runs along the western boundary of the municipality and its right tributary, the Aure , to the north . The two meet just northwest of the town and then strive as a canalized river towards the English Channel . In contrast to its name, Isigny-sur-Mer has no direct land share in the coastline. Only the channel-like mouth of the Vire enables a connection with the sea.
Toponymy
Isigny means property of Iso, where Iso is a Roman name and -acus is a Latin suffix relating to property.
history
Isigny's history was shaped by the development of the dairy industry at the beginning of the 19th century. The port played a major role: wood was imported from the north, butter was exported, as was coal from the mining area around Le Molay-Littry . In addition, fishing was very important until the late 1970s.
Milk production was also the origin of caramel production in Isigny. Local production reached amounts of up to 5 tons per year in the 1930s and is now around 1.5 tons. Most famous were Galliot and Dupont-d'Isigny , as well as the company Caramel d'Isigny, which was founded in 1994 after moving from Dupont-d'Isigny to Carentan .
Isigny-sur-Mer was more than 60% destroyed during the Second World War (June 8, 1944). The community lay between the American landing beaches of Utah Beach and Omaha Beach .
In 1924, Isigny was officially renamed Isigny-sur-Mer due to its proximity to the sea.
