Franck Henry Pierre Ribéry (born April 7, 1983 in Boulogne-sur-Mer ) is a French football player . The offensive player often changed clubs in his early days as a professional . Ribéry came to FC Bayern Munich in 2007 and won numerous titles with it, including the triple in 2013 . That year he was also voted Europe's Footballer of the Year . In summer 2019 he left FC Bayern Munich after 12 years and has been playing for the Italian first division club Fiorentina since August 2019 . For the French national team , Ribéry played 81 international matches and took part in two world championships and two European championships .

Career

Youth and career beginnings

Franck Ribéry was born in Boulogne-sur-Mer in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of northern France and grew up with his three siblings in simple circumstances. The family lived in a small prefabricated apartment in the socially deprived Chemin Vert district in the north of the city. At the age of two, Ribéry suffered serious cuts in a car accident, the scars of which can still be seen on his face. He started playing football on a small concrete field in the neighborhood and then joined FC Conti Boulogne at the age of six. Two years later, he switched to the neighboring club ACO Aiglon. At the age of 13 he moved from Boulogne to the youth department of the Lille OSC . He then played in lower leagues at US Boulogne , Olympique Alès and Stade Brest . He also worked as a construction worker to earn a living.

Breakthrough in the professional sector

In 2004 he signed his first professional contract with FC Metz . On August 7, 2004, Ribéry made his Ligue 1 debut against FC Nantes . In Metz , he played an excellent first half of the season under coach Jean Fernandez and was the best assist provider. For a fee of five million euros , Galatasaray Istanbul brought him to the Bosporus in January 2005 , where he fought for a regular place. While FC Metz almost relegated to Ligue 2 without Ribéry , Ribéry gained a lot of sympathy in Turkey . With Galatasaray he won his first title in 2005: The final for the Turkish Cup was won 5-1, with Ribéry scoring one goal.

At the beginning of the 2005/06 season , Olympique Marseille secured his services. Since Ribéry, as he told the press, had not received a wage in Istanbul since February, he was able to terminate the contract and change it free of charge. Galatasaray took legal action against it and denied Ribéry's statements. On April 25, 2007, the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS) ruled that Ribéry's free transfer was legal.

In Marseille , Ribéry quickly matured into a leading player under coach Jean Fernandez , under whom he had already played at Metz, and won the UEFA Cup with his team thanks to their success in the UI Cup . Because of his speed and overview of the game, Ribéry was the top performer of the southern French . After Olympique Lyon had tried hard to sign Ribérys for the 2006/07 season , Olympique Marseille declared him unsaleable.

In June 2007, however, Ribéry moved to Bayern Munich . He signed a four-year contract and was given the number 7 on his back, which Mehmet Scholl had previously worn. The clubs agreed not to disclose the transfer fee - a sum of 25 million euros was rumored by the media; this would have been the most expensive transfer in Bundesliga history at the time.

His first season in 2007/08 was very successful. With Bayern, he won the double , consisting of a German championship and a DFB Cup victory. Ribéry scored 11 goals in 28 league games, plus three more goals in the UEFA Cup , in which Bayern reached the semi-finals. At the end of the season, Ribéry was voted Footballer of the Year in Germany and France .

After a weaker season in 2008/09 , in which he still scored nine goals in 25 games, Ribéry was again German champion and DFB Cup winner in the 2009/10 season under coach Louis van Gaal . At the championship celebration on the Munich city hall balcony , he announced his early contract extension to 2015 to the cheering fans with the words “I've done five years more!” Real Madrid in particular had previously been very interested in signing the Frenchman. He missed the 2010 UEFA Champions League final against Inter Milan , lost 2-0, due to a red card he received in the semi-final first leg against Olympique Lyon for a foul on Lisandro López . Even an objection by Bayern at CAS could not prevent UEFA's suspension .

Despite the untitled 2010/11 season , Ribéry was the highest paid athlete in France in 2011 with EUR 11.4 million in revenue. In the following season 2011/12 , Ribéry completed his 100th Bundesliga appearance on August 20, 2011 in the game against Hamburger SV , in which he also scored a goal. This season he scored twelve goals in 32 games and also prepared 20 goals, which meant setting a Bundesliga record since the templates were recorded. As in the previous season, Bayern did not win any of the big titles. Borussia Dortmund had to admit defeat both in the championship and in the final of the DFB Cup . In the Champions League final in the domestic Allianz Arena participated in which Ribery until the 97th minute, Bayern defeated in the penalty shoot-out to the Chelsea .

The 2012/13 season was the most successful in Ribéry's career. In addition to winning the double of the championship and the cup, Bayern again reached the final of the Champions League under coach Jupp Heynckes , in which they won the most important European club cup with a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in what is now the third attempt. With 13 goals and 27 assists in 52 competitive games, Ribéry had a significant share in this success. After the season he extended his contract term in Munich for another two years until 2017. In the vote for European Footballer of the Year in August 2013, Ribéry prevailed against Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo . In the second half of the calendar he also won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup with Bayern , where he was awarded the Golden Ball for best player. At the end of the year, Ribéry was voted France's Footballer of the Year for the third time . In the election of World Footballer of the Year , he finished third behind Ronaldo and Messi. Ribéry was also voted into FIFA / FIFPro World XI and UEFA Team of the Year .

In 2013/14 Ribéry won the championship and DFB Cup double with Bayern Munich . In 2015 he was again German champion with FC Bayern. On March 11, 2015, he injured his right ankle in the Champions League second leg against Shakhtar Donetsk and was out for a long time. On December 5, 2015 he made his comeback after almost nine months when he came on for Robert Lewandowski in the 75th minute of the away game against Borussia Mönchengladbach and scored the goal to make it 1: 3 in the 81st minute.

On February 20, 2016, after another month-long injury break, he made his comeback in the league game against SV Darmstadt 98 when he came on for Kingsley Coman in the 53rd minute . In the 1-0 home win against Eintracht Frankfurt on April 2, 2016, he played his 201st Bundesliga game and was directly involved in 146 goals (70 goals and 76 assists). On May 7, 2016 (33rd matchday), Ribery became German champion for the fourth time in a row and was able to celebrate his sixth championship. With the cup win on May 21, 2016 4: 3 i. E. Ribéry won the double against Borussia Dortmund for the fifth time. In 2017 he won the German championship with Bayern for the fifth and in 2018 for the sixth time in a row .

In the summer of 2019, the Frenchman left the club after twelve years, and a farewell game is planned for 2020. In his last Bundesliga game for Munich, Ribéry scored a goal and became the sole record champion with nine championship titles after winning the 29th championship. During his time at Bayern, he won 24 titles, more than any other player before.

AC Florence

Shortly before the start of the 2019/20 season , Ribéry joined the Italian first division club Fiorentina . He was welcomed there with joy. In the first two league games he was substituted on and had a regular place as a center forward from the third game day. In the autumn he had to pause for three games after he was involved in an argument with the referees after the lost home game against Lazio Rome in the final phase and pushed one of the linesmen. In early December 2019, he fell out after an ankle injury and had to undergo an operation. The Frenchman was able to return to advanced training in mid-February 2020.

National team

Ribéry was first called up for the French national team's friendly against Mexico on May 27, 2006. Then he was used in the final two test matches and then traveled to Germany with the French World Cup squad , but only with special permission from FIFA due to the disputes with Galatasaray (see above) . He scored his first national team goal in the round of 16 of the 2006 World Cup against Spain , when he equalized to 1-1. Ribéry was substituted on or off in all games except in the round of 16. In the final, he was replaced in the 100th minute by David Trezeguet , who was the only one who failed to score on penalties and thus helped Italy to the title.

He was also part of the French squad at the 2008 European Championship finals . In the last group game against Italy, which were lost 2-0 and meant the premature end of the tournament for France, Ribéry had to be replaced after a duel with Gianluca Zambrotta in the 10th minute with a torn syndesmosis ligament in his left leg. After surgery and intensive rehabilitation, Ribéry was returned to the Bundesliga after 14 weeks. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa he was again in the squad of the Equipe Tricolore . The team retired without a win and with only one goal scored as the bottom of the group. Ribéry was there as deputy captain and because of his involvement in internal squabbles, the so-called " fiasco of Knysna ", in the center of public criticism. He was expelled from the national team on August 17, 2010 by the disciplinary committee of the French association for three senior international matches, to which he reacted with incomprehension, but at the same time declared his willingness to continue playing for France.

In France, Ribéry's reputation has suffered as a result of these events and his involvement in the "prostitute affair". In a representative survey carried out in mid-January 2011, 43 percent of those questioned said they should not be considered for the national team again, while only 32 percent were in favor. However, within the subgroup of those very interested in football, approval outweighed 62 to 36.

On May 13, 2014 Ribéry was appointed by coach Didier Deschamps to the squad of the French national team for the 2014 World Cup finals , but ultimately had to give up his participation due to protracted back problems. On August 13, 2014, he announced his resignation from the national soccer team.

Style of play

Ribéry is characterized in particular by his ball safety, speed and dribbling strength. He is an excellent goal setter; in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons he scored the most assists in the Bundesliga. He is a two-footed player, so he achieves roughly the same shot hardness and precision with both feet. He also has strong shooting technique and power and is considered a good free kick taker . He can be used in many ways on the offensive, but prefers to act in the left offensive midfield.

Allegation of unsportsmanlike conduct

Franck Ribéry is accused of not having his temper under control. He is repeatedly involved in game situations in which opponents or television commentators want to have recognized irregular behavior such as assault . The referees are said to have often decided in favor of Ribéry in these situations.

Private

Ribéry converted from Christianity to Islam in 2006 . His Muslim name is Bilal Yusuf Mohammed. His wife, Wahiba Belhami, is from Algeria . They have known each other since their youth and have two daughters and two sons.

His brother François, who was more than three years his junior, was also active as a football player, but did not get beyond engagements with lower-class French clubs and has since ended his career. His brother Steeven (* 1995) played for a few months in the A-youth team from the beginning of 2014 and from summer 2014 in the amateur team of FC Bayern Munich in the fourth-class Bavarian regional league , but left the club in summer 2016 and came to sporadic games in the period that followed Appearances in the second leagues of France and Sweden .

Ribéry was charged in France in 2009 with having sex with an underage prostitute (punishable under Article 225-12-1 of the Code pénal ) in a Munich hotel . He did not deny the sexual contact, but according to his testimony he did not know that they were underage or that it was paid sex. A brother-in-law of Ribéry and his national team colleague Karim Benzema were also accused for the same reason . The criminal case was concluded in January 2014 after an interruption of several months. All three men were acquitted, as none of them could be proven - also in the opinion of the public prosecutor - that they were aware of the prostitutes' minority.
