The Division 1 1972-73 was the 35th staging of the professional French football league. Champion was the third time since 1965 the FC Nantes .

The first game day was August 9, 1972, the last game day was June 2, 1973. There was a short “winter break” between December 18 and January 6.

Eligible to participate were those clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th, plus three direct promoters from the second division . Instead of the previous year-16. Paris Saint-Germain FC took into account Paris FC . PSG had lost its license and was relegated to the third (amateur) league because it did not meet the association's regulation , according to which professional clubs also had to maintain amateur and youth teams. The PFC was able to take over the PSG squad. Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

The best start to the season was recorded by the team from Nice, which was further strengthened in terms of personnel, under its coach Snella , which literally "shot down" numerous opponents in the first half of the season and was leading the table until the end of February 1973. The main competitor of the "young eagles" from the Côte d'Azur - the club's players are often referred to as Aiglons into the 21st century - had been defending champions Marseille until then, despite considerable internal turmoil. Initially, OM's presidium had forced the resignation of its chairman Marcel Leclerc in a “palace revolution” after the results of a tax audit became known , and the new signings like Marius Trésor had difficulty adjusting during the entire season. The decline of both teams at the beginning of the second half of the season went hand in hand with a series of successes for FC Nantes, which caught up with the leaders even though he had not been counted among the favorites before the start of the season. But the Canaris in their yellow jerseys were now reaping the fruits of their excellent youth work; half a dozen regular players had emerged from their own talent school and, together with a few veterans, formed a functioning unit which, compared to the master teams of the mid-1960s, played “a little less elegant and urgent, but successfully mixed”. Even a serious injury to his most successful striker Marcos in the away win in Saint-Étienne in March and subsequent defeats against two teams from midfield (Reims and Angers) in the last third of the season could be compensated. Because Nantes had the best defense in the league in the end, and the fact that five other players were also very dangerous goals - which made the offensive series more difficult to calculate for their opponents - made it possible for the team to celebrate their third French championship title after the third last match day, which she achieved in the end with five points ahead of Nice. Viewed over the entire season, the Canaris owed this success in particular to their home strength; In front of their own audience, they only lost one game and only dropped five points.

In the fight against relegation it was clear at an early stage that the extremely weak AC Ajaccio, who had only brought home two draws from 19 matches in foreign stadiums, would have to go to Division 2 . On the other hand, it wasn't until the final match day that it was decided who would have to accompany him there: Red Star and Valenciennes one of the three newcomers hit, while the other two (Strasbourg and Sedan) were able to secure relegation at the last minute. For the following season, supplemented Racing Lens , Troyes Aube Football and the AS Monaco - which it yet in two Barrages against the runner-up of the other second division group US du Grand Boulogne , had to prevail - the participants of the top division.

On the first weekend in December, only five of the ten scheduled games were played, and several first division teams made up a team mostly or exclusively with amateur players. The background to this was a strike by numerous professionals organized in the UNFP players 'union , with which they reacted to various "circumvents" by the clubs of the temporary players' contracts introduced in 1969. Since there was no "equality of arms" between the opponents in three of the five games - the amateur football teams from Paris FC (1:11 against Metz), Strasbourg (0: 4 in Marseille) and Lyon (0: 3 in Bastia) were both defeated against eleven professionals - the association canceled all the matches that had been played and rescheduled the matchday in April 1973 from scratch.
