Erich Maas (born December 24, 1940 in Prüm ) is a former German soccer player who played in the Bundesliga for 1. FC Saarbrücken , Eintracht Braunschweig and FC Bayern Munich as well as for French clubs in the first to third leagues. He was national champion with Braunschweig and FC Nantes .

Career

In Germany

SV Prüm / 1. FC Saarbrücken

In the small Eifel town of Prüm in what is now the Bitburg-Prüm district, at the foot of the Schneifel , the youth player at SV Prüm began playing football. Maas played in the right wing position at SV Prüm, later - because he was strong on both feet - in Saarbrücken and Braunschweig on the left wing position. Technically adept and with an extraordinary basic speed and sprint strength, he became one of the strongest winger in the early years of the Bundesliga . The trained confectioner moved to Saarland for the 1962/63 season to 1. FC Saarbrücken in the Oberliga Südwest . The talented winger was used by coach Helmuth Johannsen in 23 games in which he also scored nine goals. At the end of the season, 1. FC Saarbrücken took fifth place in the table and was accepted into the newly created Bundesliga together with 1. FC Kaiserslautern . The striker Erich Maas was therefore one of the first players in the founding year of the Bundesliga in 1963, but 1. FC Saarbrücken was relegated from the Bundesliga in the first season. Coach Johannsen had moved to Braunschweig and his successor Helmut Schneider was unable to keep the class with the Southwest representative. The man from Prüm made 21 games and one goal in the Bundesliga’s debut year.

Eintracht Braunschweig

But after relegation Maas got an offer from his former coach Johannsen and moved to Eintracht Braunschweig . With the pair of wings Klaus Gerwien / Erich Maas, the long-term planning coach Johannsen built on a dangerous counter game from a strong defensive. With the technically excellent half-striker Lothar Ulsaß , who was also very dangerous, Eintracht - known for its defensive bulwark around goalkeeper Horst Wolter and the central defenders Joachim Bäse and Peter Kaack - also had the offensive level for places in the upper table area. At the end of the 1966/67 season Erich Maas was German champion with Braunschweig . He completed 33 games in the championship round and scored ten goals. In addition to winning the title, the games in the European Cup in the 1967/68 season were outstanding in his time in Braunschweig. First the left winger stormed successfully in both matches against Rapid Vienna in September 1967, then the big challenge was Juventus Turin . Braunschweig won the home game on January 31, 1968 with 3-2 goals, but lost in Turin with a penalty in the 88th minute of the game with 0-1. Also in the decider on March 20, 1968 in Bern, again Juventus prevailed 1-0, Erich Maas stormed on the left wing of Eintracht. After a test match of the DFB selection on January 24, 1968 in Essen against black and white Essen , in which Maas scored two goals, he was in the squad of the national team for the international match on March 6 in Brussels against national coach Helmut Schön Belgium - came on in the 78th minute for Georg Volkert - appointed. On September 24, 1969 in the 1-0 victory in Sofia over Bulgaria and on April 8, 1970 in the 1-1 draw in Stuttgart against Romania , he came to further appearances in the senior national team.

FC Bayern Munich

In 1970 he moved to FC Bayern Munich , where he was unable to gain a foothold. Under coach Udo Lattek he only came to six missions. The recognized good left winger played all six games (without defeat) in Munich in the position of the right winger. His last game for Bayern was also his last in the Bundesliga and a special one: On October 7, 1970 (10th matchday), he won the 3-1 home win over 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the 46th minute for Uli Hoeneß one and in the 54th minute - just 8 minutes later (!) - replaced for Edgar Schneider .

Erich Maas has played a total of 208 league games (43 goals), 13 DFB Cup (2 goals) and 5 European Cup games.

In France

FC Nantes

During the 1970/71 season he moved from Bavaria to the first French division for FC Nantes , which under coach José Arribas had developed into one of the two top clubs in France. He played his first league game there in mid-November 1970. In the following years - Maas stayed until 1975 - he came to 150 first division games in which he scored 43 goals. His most successful season was 1972/73 , when he became French champion and stood in the cup final , which was lost on June 17, 1973 with 1: 2 against Olympique Lyon . Individually, he was the strongest in 1971/72 : With his 16 goals this season, he was 12th on the top scorer list.

FC Rouen and Paris FC

For the 1975/76 season he moved to the second division FC Rouen , for which he scored seven goals in 29 games. The following year he moved to league rivals Paris FC , for whom he scored 10 goals in 22 games. In 1977 Maas played for the third division club CS Stiring-Wendel - just a stone's throw from his first sporting station in Saarbrücken . For this he completed 27 games and was successful as a goalscorer six times.
