The Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar is the regional highest football league for the federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland and one of the fifth-rate leagues in the league system in Germany . The regional football association Southwest is responsible for the administration of the league. The regional association is a regional association made up of the soccer associations Rhineland, Saarland and Southwest. The next higher division is the regional league . Between 1978 and 1994 this division was called the Amateur Oberliga Südwest and between 1994 and 2012 as Oberliga Südwest .
history
The amateur league as a substructure for the professional leagues was created in 1978. In the southwest, the best teams from the three amateur leagues, the southwest, Rhineland and Saarland, qualified for it. When the Regionalliga started playing in 1994, the league continued to exist as the fourth highest division, but was only called the Oberliga from now on. With the introduction of the 3rd league for the 2008/09 season, the Oberliga Südwest was the fifth highest division. For the 2012/13 season the name was changed to Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar .
In terms of its extent, it is identical to the second-rate old regional league (1963–1974) and the old upper league. Only from 1974 to 1978 there was no league that corresponds to today's league.
mode
The nominal strength of the league is 18 clubs, which play against each other in a first and a second round. At the end of the season, the champion will be promoted to the regional league, the last two teams will be relegated to the Südwest, Rheinland or Saarland league, depending on their association.
If the champions of the upper league have not applied for or been granted a license for the regional league, the best-placed club that fulfills these conditions will be promoted. The promoted team in 2005, 1. FC Kaiserslautern II , was only runner-up in the league, but benefited from the fact that the champions Borussia Neunkirchen had waived a license application for economic reasons.
The same applies if the club that provides the champions already has a team in the regional league.
For every relegated from the regional league to the major league, another team also descends from the major league. So there can be a maximum of five relegated players from the league.
After the 2007/08 season 1. FSV Mainz 05 II , 1. FC Kaiserslautern II, Wormatia Worms and Eintracht Trier were promoted to the newly founded Regionalliga West. Eintracht Bad Kreuznach and FV Engers 07 were relegated to the respective association league. The champion and runner-up champion rose from each of the three leagues.
