History and sporting success

Club history

The Saarwellingen football club from Saarwellingen, near Saarlouis in western Saarland, has been one of the most successful clubs in the state for decades. Founded in 1911 as SSV Saarwellingen, it was renamed to FSV after the Second World War when it was re-established in 1946. The first phase of success came at the end of the 50s, when the FSV won the 2nd Amateur League West in 1959 and immediately marched through to the Amateur League. However, this turned out to be a size too big, and they rose again immediately, but then held the 2nd Saar amateur league for several years (until 1965).

They returned to this in 1972, won the championship title in 1975 and established themselves directly in the forefront of the Saarland amateur league, which was the third division at the time. Seventh place in 1978 was enough to secure a starting place for the new league as the last team (the lead over SC Friedrichsthal, which was eighth, was two points). The big dreams at Weidenbruch, where shortly before the hard court had turned into a beautiful course with natural turf, did not come true, however, and with only four wins this season, the FSV had to return to the league as penultimate.

The return was successful in 1985: The Saarwellingen team won the Association League championship with a two-point lead over pursuers SV Mettlach. This time the black and whites were able to successfully establish themselves in the top division with a young team, mostly local players like Ralf Klau or Mathias Malter. As a newcomer, the Saarwellingen team held the class fairly confidently in 1986 with 14th place (the gap to the first relegation place was five points in the end). All in all, a phase of ten consecutive years began, in which the FSV played in the major league and was mostly able to occupy midfield positions between 6 and 13. And usually in front of a decent number of spectators: When Borussia Neunkirchen took to the Weidenbruch, the club could definitely count on more than 2,000 visitors. The best placement in the club's history was sixth place in the 1990/91 season.

The descent in 1995 was unfortunate: Because two clubs from the regional league came down with Wissen and Edenkoben, four teams had to be relegated from the league, and Saarwellingen was fourth from bottom to suffer. On the last day of the match SV Elversberg passed and the FSV was one point behind Schiffweiler and Elversberg in the first relegation rank, although not a single game day was on a relegation zone during the whole season. The year before they had suffered a very bitter defeat: The Saarland Cup final against the association league club SC Großrosseln was lost 3-2. Up to the 85th minute, the FSV led 2-0 in Ensdorf and instead of the favored FSV, Großrosseln could look forward to participating in the DFB Cup (and Hamburger SV as an opponent).

After relegation, the FSV stayed in the association league for seven years before slipping into the lower amateur leagues, among other things because the finances were still causing major problems after the stresses of the upper division years. In retrospect, one can say that the Oberliga, which at the time was still the 3rd highest division in Germany, was a great adventure, but was held for a few years too long. Since then, Saarwellingen has been increasingly relying on youth work and players from Saarwellingen and the surrounding area
