The VfB Dillingen (officially: Verein für Ballspiele Dillingen 1906 eV ) is a football club from Dillingen / Saar in the Saarlouis district . The first soccer team played for three years in the then third and fourth class Oberliga Südwest and twice took part in the DFB Cup .

history

The club was founded on June 9, 1906 as Viktoria Dillingen and merged three years later with the high school club Dillingen to form FC Dillingen . This became the Dillingen Movement Games Association on March 9, 1919 and finally, on February 3, 1946, today's Dillingen Ball Games Association .

The club first drew attention to itself in 1930, when the team rose to the then first-class district class Rhine / Saar after a 2-1 play-off victory over Phoenix Kaiserslautern . As bottom of the table , VfB rose again immediately. After the Second World War, they were promoted to the Saarland Amateur League in 1952 , where VfB became champions straight away in 1953 . In the following round of promotion to the II. Southwest Division , the Dillinger had to be content with third place after two defeats in the last two games. A year later, with a strongly rejuvenated team, the class could only just be maintained. In 1959 VfB was runner-up behind SC Friedrichsthal .

Three years later it went down to the 2nd amateur league in 1962 and after two relegations in a row, VfB had arrived in the B class in 1965. The return to the A-class in 1967 was followed by promotion to the 2nd amateur league in 1970. Two years later, VfB in 1972 returned to the top division in Saarland. There the Dillinger established themselves as a top team and in 1973 beat the regional league club 1. FC Saarbrücken 2-1 in a Southwest Cup game . In 1974 VfB took part in the DFB Cup for the first time and failed in the second round at SC Jülich . Four years later, Dillinger qualified for the newly created Oberliga Südwest in 1978 .

Despite an 8-1 defeat by the amateurs of 1. FC Kaiserslautern , they managed to stay up in the 1978/79 season, which was followed by relegation a year later. The direct rise was missed as runner-up behind Rot-Weiß Hasborn-Dautweiler . In 1987 the team reached the final of the Saarland Cup , which was lost 2-1 to SV St. Ingbert . In the first round of the DFB Cup 1987/88, VfB lost to TSG Giengen 0-1. In 1994, the Dillinger runners-up in the association league and returned to the Oberliga Südwest. This was followed by direct relegation, which was followed in 2000 by relegation to the regional league. Since the state league championship in 2009, VfB Dillingen has played in the Saarland league until, in the 2017/18 season, as runner-up in this division, due to the waiver of Saarland champion TuS Herrensohr, promotion to the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz / Saar was achieved. However, VfB had to relegate again in the following 2018/19 season .
