The gymnastics and sports community Giengen 1861 is a Baden-Württemberg sports club from Giengen an der Brenz . The club's soccer team appeared nationwide in the 1980s as a two-time participant in the DFB Cup .

Career

The club was founded in May 1861 as the men's gymnastics club Giengen . In 1909 a football department was created at the club, which split off in 1923 as part of the clean divorce under the name FV 1909 Giengen . In 1933 the two clubs merged again and gave themselves the name TSG Giengen , which is still used today .

After the Second World War , TSG Giengen was one of the founding members of the 2nd Wuerttemberg Amateur League in 1950 and took part in season 3 of the league. Initially, the team played with in the front and in 1956 reached third place in the table. Two years later, the club had to relegate from the league, but was able to manage the direct promotion. In 1961, the team missed promotion to the 1st amateur league as runner-up behind SSV Aalen , and in 1966 they had to relegate again.

In 1972 TSG Giengen was promoted to the second amateur league and with four points ahead of fellow promoted SpVgg Au succeeded in marching through to the third-class amateur league North Württemberg as the season winner . There, the team reached seventh place twice as the best finish of the season, before after four years of league membership as ninth in the table, the qualification for the newly created Oberliga Baden-Württemberg was missed. In the association league Württemberg the team established itself in the midfield and in 1981 missed two points behind Sportfreunde Schwäbisch Hall to return to the third division.

In 1986, the fourth division moved into the final of the WFV Cup , but lost to VfR Aalen on penalties on May 19 of that year in the Heidenheim Albstadion . Nevertheless, the team was qualified for the DFB Cup 1986/87 , where they met Hannover 96 in the first round . Although the amateur club was able to take an early lead through Jürgen Kniel, the Lower Saxony club turned the game around and continued with a 3-1 victory. In 1987 TSG Giengen repeated the finals in the association cup and returned the favor with a clear 5-1 victory over VfR Aalen for the previous year's defeat. In the DFB Cup 1987/88 , the team had to compete in the first round at VfB Dillingen , but were able to prevail with a 1-0 win in Saarland. In the second round, VfL Bochum played , who prevailed with a 2-1 win after extra time.

In 1988 the soaring of the football team was over and they were relegated from the association league. In the following years it went down to the district league.
