In the early 1970s, the first division clubs Bayern Munich , VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund advertised the young player. In the Regionalliga Südwest Weinkauff won the runner-up with Pirmasens in the 1969/70 season and moved into the Bundesliga promotion round. Against the promoted Kickers Offenbach on June 6, 1970, he scored the 1-0 lead in a 1-1 home game. At the side of veteran Helmut Kapitulski , he completed all eight promotion games.

For the 1970/71 season Weinkauff moved to the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund. With Manfred Ritschel , Jahn Regensburg added another talent to coach Horst Witzler's team . At the side of Sigfried Held , Horst Trimhold and Werner Weist , Weinkauff made 28 appearances in his first BL season and scored the most goals within the club with eight goals. He made his Bundesliga debut on August 28, 1970 at the home game against Bayern Munich, which ended 0-0 when he came on for Trimhold in the 37th minute. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on September 19, 1970 in a 2-2 draw against 1. FC Köln. In the summer of 1971, Borussia, with Held, Heidkamp, Trimhold, Weist, Neuberger and Wosab, had to cope with irreplaceable losses due to financial reasons, which in 1972 resulted in relegation from the Bundesliga. In the year of relegation Weinkauff came to 18 games with four goals. For the 1972/73 season he returned to his hometown club FK Pirmasens.

In the first year of the newly introduced 2nd Bundesliga , 1974/75, coach Bernd Hoss and his captain Dieter Weinkauff - he contributed 15 goals in 35 missions - led Pirmasens to the runner-up in the group south. In the home qualification game against the north runner-up Bayer 05 Uerdingen on June 18, 1975, Weinkauff scored two goals for his team at 4: 4.
