history

Early history and Roman times

A barrow in the raw forest in the Hermersberg district was dated to the Hallstatt period (800 to 400 BC); other traces of settlement near Landstuhl, such as stone wreath graves, date from the Latène period, which spans the period from 500 BC to the birth of Christ. In post-Christian times the area was settled by the Romans, as evidenced by coin finds from the first to fourth centuries AD from the Roman settlement near Landstuhl and the Heidelsburg near Waldfischbach-Burgalben .

Middle Ages and Modern Times

The area on which Hermersberg originated belonged to Queidersbach . Between 978 and 983, Emperor Otto II donated this area to Hornbach Monastery . The first written mention of Hermersberg can be found in the copy book of the Falkenstein lordship from 1364 when the tithe rights were divided . Here Hermersberg was mentioned in a document on the “next Thursday after Holy Thursday ” (March 28, 1364). The desert areas of Holzingen , Stranzberg and the Klappermühle are located near Hermersberg .

Hermersberg later belonged to the Landstuhl estate of the Lords of Sickingen until the end of the 18th century . When Landstuhl was divided in 1680, the Grand Court with Hermersberg became part of the Sickingen-Hohenburg line. In 1700, parts of the Grand Court were sold to farmers as Caduc goods , which means fallen land. At that time, the Hermersberg district was around 1300 hectares in size . Hermersberg owned 19½ lots.

Old village well

In 1794 the left bank of the Rhine was occupied in the First Coalition War. From 1978 to 1814 Hermersberg belonged to the canton of Waldfischbach in the Donnersberg department and was subordinate to Mairie Horrbach .

Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna , the area first came to Austria in June 1815 and was ceded to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 on the basis of a state treaty . Under the Bavarian administration, Hermersberg belonged to the Pirmasens Land Commissioner in the Rhine District from 1817, to the Pirmasens District Office from 1862 and has belonged to the Pirmasens district since 1939 (renamed the Südwestpfalz district in 1997 ).

After the Second World War , the municipality of Hermersberg within the French occupation zone became part of the Palatinate government district in the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate . In the course of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , the community was assigned to the newly created community of Waldfischbach-Burgalben in 1972 .

Place name

In the defining word of the place name, after the name of the water body Hermannesbach is attested here as early as the 12th century , a personal name Hermann is added. From Hermannsberg and Hermannsperg was then over time Hermes mountain and finally Hermersberg . A Hermann, who officiated as Vogt of the Hornbach monastery in 1100 , can be associated with the place name.

Economy and Infrastructure

economy

Until the last century Hermersberg was a farming village with over 100 farms and almost 30 schnapps distilleries, which is where the Schnapsgasse Festival, which is held up to the present day, goes back. Today only two farms and three smaller distilleries exist. Of the 13 km² community area, 47.3% are still used for agriculture. Hermersberg now has a local commercial infrastructure in the form of a small industrial area, but it is still characterized by many commuters. A special feature is the ostrich farm, which, in addition to raising the animals, also produces ostrich products such as meat and sausage. In April 2012, the first straw heating plant in Rhineland-Palatinate was put into operation on the outskirts , with an output of 880  kW to supply around 80 residential units with heat via a local heating network. The 600 tons of straw burned annually save around 250,000 liters of heating oil . In addition, there are two wind farms on site, one in the northwest and one in the southeast of the municipality.

traffic

State road 473 , which leads from Wallhalben to Steinalben, runs right through Hermersberg . In the middle of the settlement area, the state road 474 branches off from it , which connects the community with Petersberg and Pirmasens , and the district road 25 to Waldfischbach-Burgalben.

Hermersberg is connected to the national road network of Germany and the neighboring countries of Luxembourg and France via the federal motorway 62 (Pirmasens – Nonnweiler) . The federal highway 270 leads south in the direction of Pirmasens and in the north to Kaiserslautern. There is a train stop in the neighboring village of Steinalben. This means that Hermersberg is connected to the Deutsche Bahn network, even if only indirectly. The Steinalben stop is located on the so-called Biebermühlbahn , which connects the cities of Pirmasens and Kaiserslautern.

education

Hermersberg has a primary school with around 60 students.

tourism

In addition, the Südwestpfalz-Tour cycle path leads right through Hermersberg.
