Erlenbach bei Dahn is a municipality in the district of Südwestpfalz in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Dahner Felsenland , which has its administrative seat in the city of Dahn and within which it is the fifth smallest local community in terms of population.

Erlenbach is located in the German part of the Wasgau , as the southern part of the Palatinate Forest and the adjoining northern part of the Vosges are also called, in the so-called Dahner Felsenland . 87.6 percent of the district area is forested.

The Erlenbach brook was first mentioned in a document in 760. The place itself is only mentioned in 1348. From 1500 to 1650 it belonged to the Electoral Palatinate .

From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Erlenbach was incorporated into the canton of Dahn . In 1815 the place Austria was added. Just one year later, Erlenbach moved to the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1818 the place was part of the Landkommissariat Pirmasens , which was converted into a district office in 1862.

In 1939 Erlenbach was incorporated into the district of Pirmasens (from 1997 district of Südwestpfalz ) . Since the place was in the Red Zone , the residents were temporarily evacuated with the beginning of World War II . After the war, the municipality within the French occupation zone became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate. In the course of the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform , Erlenbach was assigned to the newly created community of Dahner Felsenland in 1972 .

In 2012, 60.2 percent of the population were Catholic and 16.7 percent Protestant. The rest belonged to another religion or were non-denominational. The Catholics belong to the Diocese of Speyer and are subordinate to the Deanery Pirmasens , the Evangelicals to the Protestant Church of the Palatinate . The Catholic Church of St. Mary of the Assumption and Egidius is located on site .

Judaism

The Jewish community once resident there moved into a synagogue in 1842 , which no longer exists. Its members were buried in nearby Busenberg . On October 22, 1940, the Jews living in Erlenbach were deported as part of the Wagner-Bürckel campaign . In reminiscence of the Jews deported during the Third Reich, stumbling blocks were laid on site in November 2007 .

The municipal council in Erlenbach consists of eight council members who were elected by a majority vote in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman.

Dirk Eichberger became Mayor of Erlenbach on March 26, 2016. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was confirmed in office for another five years with a share of 84.62 percent of the vote. Eichberger's predecessor, the long-time local mayor Bernd Arnold, died in February 2016.

Berwartstein Castle

The castles of Berwartstein and Little France, which are located within the municipality, are designated as monument zones .

The former is the only castle in Wasgau that is currently inhabited. Probably built around 1000, it was first mentioned in a document in 1152, when it was given as a gift by Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa to Günther von Henneberg, then Bishop of Speyer . After being destroyed and rebuilt several times, it was restored to its present form around 1900. Little France formed a so-called "gun turret" and served as the Vorwerk of Berwartstein.
