Palatinate Forest Nature Park
The Palatinate Forest Nature Park is a German nature park and covers an area of 179,800 hectares in the south of Rhineland-Palatinate , where it borders on France . The Palatinate Forest , the largest contiguous forest area in the Federal Republic of Germany , forms 76% of the nature park , which is the center of the Palatinate region . The nature park has an impressive landscape in which mainly red sandstone rocks stand out. Together with the Regional Nature Park Northern Vosges (French: Vosges du Nord ), its French continuation, it forms the Palatinate Forest-Northern Vosges Biosphere Reserve .

Sub-areas
Due to its landscape structure, the Palatinate Forest is divided into three areas:
- the Northern or Lower Palatinate Forest , which is bounded in the north by the North Palatinate Bergland and extends to about the A 6 in the south
- the Middle Palatinate Forest , which extends from there to the Pirmasens - Landau line
- the southern Palatinate Forest , which extends from the Pirmasens – Landau line to the French border in the south. The southern part of the Palatinate Forest and the adjoining northern part of the Vosges together form the cross-border landscape of the Wasgau .
In addition, there is the former landscape protection area of the German Wine Route , which extends on the eastern edge of the nature park at the transition to the Rhine plain .

history
In 1958, the Palatinate Forest, including the protected landscape areas was Palatinate Forest , German Wine Road and ice and Eckbachtal declared a nature park in 1967 and a national regulation as a conservation area Palatinate Forest nature reserve under protection.
In 1992 the Palatinate Forest Nature Park was recognized by UNESCO as the twelfth German biosphere reserve . Since 1998, together with the French Northern Vosges Nature Park, it has formed the first cross-border biosphere reserve Palatinate Forest-Northern Vosges (French: Vosges du Nord-Forêt palatine ).

The regional association of the Palatinate is responsible for the nature park . On January 1, 2014, he took over this task from the Pfälzerwald Nature Park , which was founded on July 20, 1982 and dissolved on December 31, 2013 . V. Association members were the districts and urban districts that have a share in the nature park in terms of area, as well as the district association of the Palatinate as well as various hiking, sports associations and environmental associations. The sponsoring association Naturpark Pfälzerwald e. V. was dissolved by a resolution of its general assembly of December 4, 2013 on December 31, 2013 and its tasks were transferred to the District Association of the Palatinate. In a meeting of the Palatinate District Assembly at Hambach Castle on December 20, 2013, the formal resolution to take over was made, so that the Palatinate District Association has assumed sole responsibility since January 1, 2014. As part of the organizational restructuring, a committee with 22 members was formed, which is primarily responsible for the diverse interests of the nature park. In addition to representatives of political organizations, it also includes five members who previously belonged to the nature park board. They are representatives of the Palatinate Forest Association (PWV), the Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) , the Pollichia Association for nature research and conservation , the Association of Friends of Nature and the nature sports associations .
The office of the nature park has been based in Lambrecht since 1997 .
