Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park
The Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park was established in 1980 and covers an area of 2055 km² in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland , 101 km² of which is accounted for by the new Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park .
The association “Naturpark Saar-Hunsrück” based in Hermeskeil is responsible for the nature park . In Hermeskeil the association maintains an " adventure museum " and one of six information centers.

The towns and communities of Perl , Mettlach , Losheim am See , Merzig , Weiskirchen , Wadern , Beckingen , Rehlingen-Siersburg , Wallerfangen , Nonnweiler , Tholey , Nohfelden , Oberthal , Namborn are located in the Saarland part of the nature park . St. Wendel and Freisen . Furthermore the city Lebach with the districts Dörsdorf and Steinbach , the community Schmelz with the districts Dorf , Limbach and Michelbach and the community Eppelborn with the district Dirmingen .
In Rhineland-Palatinate , there are parts of the municipalities of Saarburg-Kell , Konz , Ruwer , Hermeskeil ( Trier-Saarburg district ), Thalfang , Bernkastel-Kues ( Bernkastel-Wittlich district ), Kirchberg / Hunsrück ( Rhein-Hunsrück district ), Herrstein- Rhaunen , Birkenfeld and Baumholder ( Birkenfeld district ) and parts of the community of Morbach (Bernkastel-Wittlich district) and the large town of Idar-Oberstein (Birkenfeld district).
Core zones
In the Rhineland-Palatinate part, seven core zones are defined, for which extended protection provisions apply:
- Mannebach Valley
- Saartal-Leukbachtal
- Osburger Hochwald
- Western part of the Black Forest high forest
- Eastern part of the Black Forest high forest - Idarwald
- Neuhof adventure
- Southeastern high forest Kirschweiler / Buhlenberg

Protection purpose
The two countries have, for their part, formulated different priorities with regard to the protection purpose .
Saarland: “In the nature park, the low mountain range, which is ideal for recreation of the population and for nature-loving tourism, with its characteristics that shape the landscape, such as extensive mixed deciduous forests, diverse structured agricultural landscapes with grassland in the floodplains, natural streams and lively villages and settlements, is to be preserved, maintained and developed become."
Rhineland-Palatinate: "The protection purpose for the entire nature park is the preservation of the unique landscape, the beauty and the special recreational value of the southwestern Hunsrück and the Saar Valley with the accompanying mountain ranges from the state border to Kanzem." Additional protection purpose for the seven core zones In Rhineland-Palatinate, it is possible to relax in silence.
Saar-Hunsrück Climb
A project of the Natural Park is the 410 km long premium hiking trail Saar-Hunsrück Climb from Perl on the border with Luxembourg on Mettlach , Weiskirchen and the Roman city of Trier to Primstalsperre , on to the Erbeskopf , the rampart of Otzenhausen , for Wildburger head on Idar-Oberstein up to Boppard am Rhein.
