history

The first traces of settlement in the Steinbacher Bann are documented by archaeological finds. So one found u. a. Bronze rings , stone axes, graves from the Latène period (5th – 1st century BC) and coins .

Today's Steinbach originated between the 9th and 13th centuries from the two villages of Obersteinbach and Niedersteinbach. Steynback inferior and Steynback superior already belonged to the parish of Echeswyler (Thalexweiler) around the year 1000, together with Dessdorf (Dörsdorf) and Aspach ( Aschbach ). Politically, the parish belonged to the Duchy of Lorraine in the Oberamt Schaumburg. The affiliation to Lorraine lasted until the French Revolution . During this time, the two villages of Obersteinbach and Niedersteinbach were merged to form a municipality that was inhabited by 49 families in 1789 and had 244 inhabitants. It was assigned to the canton of Tholey until 1814 , in the Moselle department .

In some places in the municipality, iron ore used to be dug, which was further processed in Bettingen (today Schmelz ). Geologically, the Steinbach ore mines belonged to the south wing of the so-called Rotliebe Mulde.

As part of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland , the previously independent municipality of Steinbach over Lebach, which belonged to the district of Ottweiler , was assigned to the municipality of Lebach.
