Location of Oppen in Saarland |
Oppen is a district of the municipality of Beckingen in the Merzig-Wadern district ( Saarland ).
geography
Oppen is located at the end of the upper Haustadter valley at the intersection of two former Roman roads on the edge of the wooded "Großer Lückner". Oppen is located slightly northeast in the immediate vicinity of the Beckingen district of Reimsbach .
history
Oppen's founding may be traced back to major forest clearings during the reign of Charlemagne . When exactly the place was founded is not known, but it is assumed that the neighboring town of Reimsbach, as well as its neighboring town of Erhaben, had already been founded. Ophoben, the original name of Oppens, was probably not founded until after the year 1000, because almost all localities that were founded in the context of the creation of new settlements in the years 850 to 900 on former forest area end with the syllables -rath, -roth, -ruth or -reuth. Due to the poorly productive agricultural areas within the Oppens district , as well as from the name, it can be assumed that Oppen did not emerge until after the year 1000.
politics
The mayor of Oppen is currently Ralf Selzer, his deputy is Dirk Maxem.
leisure
The traditional Whitsun fair in Lückner and the “Green-White Night” on Carnival are two events that take place in Oppen and are known throughout the region. The "Großer Lückner" forest area is used as a hiking area and mountain bike route. There is a Kneipp facility , a fountain and a children's playground.
Odile's Chapel
There are legends about the Odilienquelle, which rises in the forest area of the Großer Lückner. The water of the spring is said to provide relief and healing for those with eye diseases. As a result of a vow from the time of the Thirty Years' War , a procession leads every year on Whit Monday from the parish church of Wahlen to the source of St. Odile. This rises below the Chapel of St. Odile, built in neo-Gothic style from red sandstone. The source is said to have been used for cultic purposes even before Christianization. The legend of St. Odilia reports that she was born on the Hohenburg near Oberehnheim in Alsace. She was the daughter of Duke Eticho and was born blind . Because of this, her father wanted to have her killed. However, a compassionate nurse saved the child. The local legend tells that after washing her eyes with the water from the spring on the Lückner, Odilia received her eyesight through a divinely effected miracle. Many people who want to have children place small crosses on the side walls of the chapel and hope that their hopes will be fulfilled.
