Honzrath is a district of the municipality of Beckingen in the Merzig-Wadern district ( Saarland ). Until the end of 1973 Honzrath was an independent municipality.

Honzrath is located about 30 km northwest of Saarbrücken .
history
The place was mentioned for the first time as Hunsart in a document dated April 17, 1306 . It says in the documents: Peter on the banks of Hunsart (Honzrath) declares that he has leased the allod in Haustadt, belonging to the Mettlach Küsterei , from the monk and sexton Rainer von Mettlach, with the consent of Abbot Arnold, for 7 soloists and 2 capons per year . "
Honzrath celebrated its 700th anniversary from August 12th to 14th, 2006. The place was founded in the time of the Frankish settlement, which is what the name indicates in its interpretation as "clearing of the Huno". However, settlement in the region has been proven much earlier. Remnants of the wall of a Roman villa were found in the Gewann Böckerchen and clearly identified as dating from Roman times (1st to 2nd century AD).
In 1440 the Wilscheider Hof was first mentioned in a document. The witch trials , which lasted from 1603 to 1633, lasted for thirty years . twelve men and women were charged with witchcraft and there were at least six executions. It can be assumed that Honzrath suffered a lot during the Thirty Years' War . According to censuses, there were two fireplaces again only in 1663 . From 1670 the ownership and sovereignty over Honzrath changed between Lorraine and French rule.
1816, the town was one for the mayoralty Haustadt belonging rural community in the Prussian Trier . In 1845 Honzrath received its own elementary school , which remained as a primary school until 2005.
In the course of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland , Honzrath lost its communal independence on January 1st, 1974 and became a district of the Beckingen community.
In 1985, a municipal partnership was concluded with the French municipality of La Grande-Paroisse in the Seine-et-Marne department ; Maire Michel Théry, Mayor Franz Kien and Mayor Werner Reinert signed the partnership documents. Sponsored by a Comité de Jumelage de La Grande-Paroisse and the Honzrath Partnership Association, families from both places meet every year.
Awards
Honzrath was awarded the bronze medal in the Saarland state competition " Our village should be more beautiful " in 1979 and 1981 . Both the scenic and cultural attractions, such as the famous rock cellars - there were once around 140 - which served as storage rooms for agricultural products - as well as the diligence of its residents to beautify were taken into account.

Honzrath is embedded in the landscape of the " Haustadter Valley ". There is a hiking trail from the sports center through the Damheck bird sanctuary over the Homerich (8.5 km), a panoramic high-altitude trail from the central Kathreinenplatz in the old village over the Merchinger Berg and through the Wolferskopf nature reserve (8 km), known for its around 30 terrestrial orchid species, and Steinbrecherweg (4 km) laid out by the Heimatverein , which opens up some of the nine formerly operated sandstone quarries .
Attractions
Fountain of the "Seer Buchela"
The most famous Honzratherin was the seer Buchela (1899–1986) , who was previously famous in Bonn . Numerous personalities from politics and contemporary history have visited her to hear something from her about their personal future. The "seer" was born on October 12, 1899 as the daughter of land drivers in Honzrath. The Buchela fountain at the foot of the Kutschert mountain keeps her memories alive.
The Honzrath rock cellars
Those who come to Kathreinenplatz in the center of the village will immediately notice them - the “Honzer Felskeller”. About 150–200 years ago and driven by hand into the red sandstone , they served as storage space for crops, as shelter for cattle and in the last days of the Second World War as an air raid shelter . Around 100 cellars are still preserved, even if some of them are in poor condition. Thanks to the initiative of the citizens of Honzrath and the Heimatverein, a number of cellars have been renovated in recent years and returned to their historical condition.
Chapel of St. Catherine
In the center of the village, in front of the historic rock cellars on the edge of "Kathreinenplatz", is the chapel of St. Catherine. It was first mentioned in a document in 1569 and is St. Consecrated to Catherine of Alexandria .
Education and culture
The home club strives not only to the study of local history, but also about the primitive language of Honzrather that the Mosel Franconian belonging Honzer Platt to get.
