particularities Schaumberg Tower ( AT )

The Schaumberg is a mountain in Saarland and the highest point in the Prims-Blies-Hügelland natural area . The mountain is a cone mountain of volcanic origin. Compared to the highest peaks in Saarland , it is relatively low at 568.2  m , but protrudes far from a rather flat area. As a result, it can be easily recognized in the landscape from quite a distance and can therefore be described as the most important elevation of the Saarland (" Saarland's local mountain "), probably also based on the tradition that it was the highest mountain in the former Saar area . It is located in the district of St. Wendel in the municipality of Tholey north of Tholey and south of Theley .

From a geological point of view, rocks from the Rotliegend formations of the Permian (e.g. hard rock from igneous rocks ) as well as deposits from the Ottweiler layers of carbon and red sandstone clods of the Triassic can be found on the Schaumberg . Under Petrologists is the tholeiite a volcanic basalt known, which is named after the town Tholey.

history

Traces that are attributed to the Celts and Romans were found on the Schaumberg . In the Middle Ages , the Schauenburg stood here, some of the walls of which can still be seen today. This castle was the seat of the bailiffs of the Abbey of St. Mauritius in Tholey and the center of an extensive property that covered about 1/6 of the area of today's Saarland. The castle was destroyed in the Thirty Years War .

The Herzweg , an approx. 2.8 km long, barrier-free hiking trail leads around the Schaumberg plateau . On it one comes u. a. past the Africa chapel . There is also the Schaumbergbad and a youth hostel on the Schaumberg .

Foam mountain tower

Main article: Schaumberg tower

In 1914 a tower in honor of Kaiser Wilhelm II was to be built on the mountain plateau . However, the execution of this plan was interrupted by the First World War. Only a 5 m high ruin remained, on which a tower with an integrated war memorial chapel was built from 1927. The larger-than-life crucifix set in the central arch of the tower was striking . This tower had to be demolished in 1972 because it was in disrepair. The undamaged crucifix should be blown up. However, the construction workers, all from the Catholic villages in the vicinity or of Italian origin, refused to blow up the symbol of faith. So the crucifix was removed undamaged, stored briefly in a shed at the edge of the mountain plateau, and later near the motorway junction at Sotzweiler erected.

The Schaumbergturm (approx. 120 m southeast of the summit, height: 37.5 m), which was rebuilt in place of the old tower and inaugurated on September 19, 1976, allows a wide view of the surrounding area. The view extends in the north to the Hunsrück , in the west to the Saargau and beyond to the French nuclear power plant Cattenom and in the south to Saarbrücken . When the weather is very clear, it is possible to see the Vosges . As a Franco-German meeting place, the tower should be a symbol of friendship between the two countries.

Extensive renovation work on the tower began in mid-2010 and was completed in August 2013. A second staircase with a panoramic elevator was built on the outside of the tower, while another elevator was built inside that leads to the viewing platform . This means that the tower and the viewing platform can be reached without barriers. The transmitter systems were dismantled and attached to a steel frame mounted on the tower. There are now two permanent exhibitions in the tower, one on Franco-German friendship and one on climate protection and climate change. In addition, a restaurant (“Schaumberg Alm”) was established on the Schaumberg plateau.

Transmitters

There are transmission systems for various radio services (e.g. radio , amateur radio , BOS ) on the Schaumberg tower . In the broadcasting sector , the location was used as a regionally important analog television broadcaster until December 2007 .
