Sotzweiler is a district of the Tholey municipality in Saarland with around 1200 inhabitants and is located at the foot of the Schaumberg . The Tholey junction of the A 1 is nearby .

history

Foundations of a villa rustica , parts of a settlement and a pottery indicate that the area was already settled in Roman times .

In 1258 Sotzweiler is mentioned for the first time as "Sucwilre" and in 1361 as "Sotzwilr" . The interpretation of the name is not yet complete, although ... Weiler was a common name in this area for a small settlement. For some time the village was owned by the Tholey Monastery and the Dukes of Lorraine . The parish was appointed by the Benedictine Abbey of Tholey. Was assigned to the canton of Tholey until 1814 , in the Moselle department . In 1846 the village consisted of 80 buildings. In 1870 there were still 33 farms. In 1961 there were 1252 inhabitants, 521 of whom were gainfully employed. On May 27, 1970 the place had 1,472 inhabitants.

As part of the Saarland regional and administrative reform , the previously independent municipality of Sotzweiler was assigned to the municipality of Tholey on January 1, 1974.

Worth seeing

The neo-Gothic parish church was built between 1913 and 1914 and is dedicated to Saint Mauritius . It was consecrated in 1915 and consecrated a year later. The four bells could only be purchased in 1936. The two-manual Stahlhuth organ is a rare example of a multiplex organ .

The Wendelinus Chapel from 1745 went into private ownership in 1922.

To the north-west of the village in an open field is the word sail , an approximately 13-meter-high steel sculpture by the local artist Heinrich Popp .
