Eusébio Oscar Cardinal Scheid SCJ (* as Oscar Francisco Scheid on December 8, 1932 in Luzerna , Brazil ) is Archbishop Emeritus of Rio de Janeiro .

Life

Eusébio Scheid, a descendant of German immigrants from Sotzweiler in the Saarland , joined the religious order of Sacred Heart Priests after finishing school and studied Catholic theology in Corupá and Rome . He received his doctorate with a Christological work at the Pontifical Gregorian University for doctorate in theology and received on 3 July 1960 in Rome, the sacrament of the priesthood by the bishop of Guaxupé , Inácio João Dal Monte OFM Cap . A week later he celebrated his first Mass in Sotzweiler. He then worked as a professor of theology at the Christ the King seminary and regional seminar for northeast Brazil in Recife .

From 1965 to 1981 he lectured liturgy and dogmatics at the Theological Institute of Taubaté , which he also headed for several years. From 1966 to 1968 he also held a teaching position for religious cultural issues at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo .

On February 11, 1981, Pope John Paul II appointed him first bishop of the diocese of São José dos Campos, which had been established two weeks earlier . He received his episcopal ordination on May 1st of the same year by the Apostolic Nuncio of Brazil, Archbishop Carmine Rocco ; Co- consecrators were the coadjutor archbishop of Aparecida , Geraldo María de Morais Penido , and the bishop of Lages , Honorato Piazera SCJ.

On January 23, 1991 he was appointed Archbishop of Florianópolis . Pope John Paul II appointed Eusébio Oscar Scheid Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro on July 25, 2001. On October 3rd of the same year he was also appointed full professor of the Byzantine faithful in Brazil .

On October 21, 2003, Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Bonifacio ed Alessio in the college of cardinals . He was a participant in the 2005 conclave .

On February 27, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation from the office of Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, submitted for reasons of age. On July 28, 2010 he also resigned as full professor for the Catholic believers of the oriental rite in Brazil. At the conclave in 2013 Cardinal took Scheid for exceeding the age limit does not participate more.
