The Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo ( Portuguese Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo , PUC-SP for short) is a Brazilian university under papal law . It is one of the largest and most prestigious Brazilian universities and is administered by the Archdiocese of São Paulo .

history

It was founded on August 13, 1946 under the cardinal of the Metropolitan Curia of São Paulo, Carlos Carmelo de Vasconcelos Motta as the “Catholic University of São Paulo”; It emerged from a merger of the Faculdade Paulista de Direito (“College of Law of the State of São Paulo”) and the Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de São Bento (College of Philosophy, Sciences and Writings in São Bento), which was founded in 1908 has been. The legal recognition by the decree with the number 9.632 takes place on August 22, 1946. The bestowal of the papal title took place in January 1947, by Pope Pius XII.

During the time of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985) there were various students and teachers from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulos, who repeatedly expressed their attitude critical of the regime . The archbishop who was in charge of the university at the time , Paulo Evaristo Arns , was known for his unwavering resolve towards those in power at the time. This archbishop granted university professorships who had been terminated because of their personal attitudes at other public universities. People persecuted by the dictatorship who started teaching at the PUC-SP were among others. A. Florestan Fernandes, Octávio Ianni and Paulo Freire. On September 22, 1977, the PUC-SP was the meeting place of the student union União Nacional dos Estudantes , UNE ("National Student Association"). The aim of the meeting was to resume the activities of this organization after it had initially been stopped by the military government.

At this meeting of students from various Brazilian universities, the military, which was commanded by Colonel Erasmo Dias, intervened . More than 900 students were arrested in the course of this operation. This incident also became known as the so-called “Invasion of the PUC” and was described in the daily Folha de São Paulo by the student association Diretório Central dos Estudantes , DCE (“Central Student Management Body”, a superordinate association of individual student associations).

At the beginning of the 1980s it was the first Brazilian university at which the rector and other elected officials could be directly elected by teachers, employees and students. In September and December 1984, two fires damaged the university theater, the most recent one being believed to have been arson.

In the early 2000s, a new campus was opened in Santana (a district of São Paulo) and another in Barueri .

In 2001 the university suffered a budget deficit of four million Brazilian reals. This deficit continued to grow over the years, forcing the university to take out bank loans . This led to further debts, which in 2005 amounted to 82 million reals. For the remainder of 2005 and for most of the following year, the resulting consequences were that some courses were canceled due to low demand. Several teachers were also fired, although some of them had waived some of their salaries in order to prevent dismissal. This in turn provoked protests from individual teachers. The beginning of 2006 finally brought the first few months for the PUC-SP, which did not lead to any new borrowing.

Orientation of the university

Most of the scientific publications in the PUC-SP can be found in the fields of law, philosophy , social sciences , education and communication . In these areas it is considered one of the most important universities in Latin America.
