The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) ( Portuguese Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul ) in Porto Alegre is a Brazilian university . About 2,100 lecturers teach in 27 faculties at the university, which was founded in 1934; the university is attended by around 24,000 students .

history

The university was founded in 1934. It emerged from the Escola de Farmácia e Química 'School of Pharmacy and Chemistry ' , which was founded in 1895 and was expanded in 1896 to include the Escola de Engenharia ' Engineering School ' . By 1934 further institutes for medicine and law were founded in Porto Alegre . In 1934 these institutes, as well as institutes for astronomy , electronics, etc. a. combined to form the newly founded University of Porto Alegre. In 1947 the University of Rio Grande do Sul was founded by amalgamating the above university, as well as the Law and Dentistry Schools in Pelotas and the Santa Maria School of Pharmacy . The university was given the addition "Federal" in December 1950 when the university was nationalized.

Facilities

campus

The UFRGS has several facilities both in Porto Alegre and outside the capital in other cities in the state.

Porto Alegre

There are four branches in Porto Alegre itself. The main campus, which also houses the administration of the UFRGS or the large auditorium, is Campus Central. This is located on the edge of the city center next to Parque Farroupilha . Here are u. a. the faculties of economics, law, architecture or engineering. In addition, there is also a cinema ( Salão da Redenção ), which mainly offers alternative films. Some of the faculties are housed in old buildings that date back to the 19th century, which makes the campus a tourist attraction. Not far from Campus Central is the Saúde campus, on which next to the university clinic, z. B. also the medical and communication science faculties are located.

On the Campus Olímpico, near the Estádio Olímpico Monumental of Grêmio , there is the sports science faculty and the necessary facilities such as several gyms, sports fields, swimming pools etc. Far outside the city is the Campus Vale, where many faculties of humanities and natural sciences are housed are. The campus was built into nature outside of the city and is therefore very quiet and somewhat cut off. The campus was built during the time of the military dictatorship and rumors suggest that attempts were made to get people from the humanities and thus more critical people out of the city.

State

In addition to the facilities in the capital of the state, there are UFRGS settlements in a few other cities, such as Gramado , Eldorado or Imbé . These facilities offer the possibility of some kind of distance learning for students who cannot or do not want to move to Porto Alegre.

canteen

Each UFRGS campus has a so-called RU ( Restaurante Universitaria ). After showing your student ID and entering a code, which is determined online and activated by paying a bank, you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner for 1.30 real for students, but also for university staff .

Student dormitories

The UFRGS has several so-called Casas dos Estudantes , most of which are located in the immediate vicinity of the Centro Campus in Cidade Baixa and on Avenida João Pessoa . The range of rooms is very limited, however.

International Office

For a number of years intensive attempts have been made to internationalize the UFRGS. For this purpose, some partnerships have already been concluded with universities all over the world (e.g. there is a very lively exchange between the law faculties of the UFRGS and the Justus Liebig University of Giessen ). However, many of the partnerships are limited to the individual faculties and are not university-wide. In addition, there are exchanges with universities in Portugal and educational institutions from other former Portuguese colonies. There are also many partnerships with French universities. For some years now, there has been a double degree - MBA International Affairs , which the Escola de Administração of the UFRGS offers together with the ESC Troyes and the University of Paris III . Many students from other Latin American countries also come to Porto Alegre to study. The UFRGS office responsible for international affairs is called RELINTER ( Rel ações Inter nacionais , International Relations ) and is located in the Central Campus.
