Gramado is a city in Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil . The municipality has 31,655 inhabitants. Gramado is located at an altitude of 830 meters in the Serra Gaúcha in the official tourist area Região das Hortênsias (region of the hydrangeas ). The municipality borders on Canela (in the east), Caxias do Sul (in the north), Nova Petrópolis (in the west), Santa Maria do Herval (in the southwest) and Três Coroas (in the southeast). Gramado is 115 km north of the state capital Porto Alegre .

history

After the original indigenous inhabitants of the area, drovers ( Tropeiros ) of Azorian origin were the first to invade the hilly and forested region around Gramado. The first settlers came from 1875, a place was only created in 1913 by German and Italian colonists. In 1954, Gramado split off as a separate community from Taquara . Thanks to its ideal location near the city of Porto Alegre, the cool Gramado has become a place for summer visitors. Meanwhile, the city is less shaped by nature and agriculture, but more by tourism with congresses and the Brazilian film festival of Gramado .

geography

Gramado has a subtropical climate that is relatively cool and humid due to its altitude. In summer it is an average of 28 degrees, in winter 6 degrees. There is occasional frost and snow. The original vegetation is araucaria forest and Mata Atlântica in the lower areas. There are many waterfalls in the surrounding valleys.

economy

Much of the economic activity is directly or indirectly related to tourism. There are more than a hundred furniture factories, about twenty chocolate factories, and many manufacturers of handicrafts. Many German and Italian immigrants process the raw materials of the region into honey, jam, wine, cheese, bread and cakes. There are correspondingly many shops in the city.

Culture

The Gramado Film Festival has been held here every year since 1973 .

tourism

Tourists often come to Gramado not because of the natural beauties and the culture of the German and Italian immigrants, but because of the numerous training courses, trade fairs and congresses in the Gramado Sierra Park , in the ExpoGramado and the numerous hotels. The most important annual event since 1973 is the important Festival de Cinema Brasileiro e Latino , where the Kikito is awarded. At Christmas time, decorations are made from empty PET bottles. Another crowd puller at Christmas time is the "Natal Luz" parade, in which hundreds of costumed people march through the parade streets, which are decorated with elaborate light decorations.

Most visited sights are the viewpoint in the valley Vale do Quilombo , the waterfall Véu de Noiva , the artificial lakes Lago Negro and Lago Joaquina beer , the theme park Mini Mundo with a replica of Neuschwanstein Castle , a Santa Claus village "Aldeia do Papai Noel" - is here Christmas all year round, the São Pedro Church , the Museu dos Festivais de Cinema and the streets and squares of the city center.

traffic

The place is on the Rota Romântica , a road that leads from São Leopoldo via Gramado and Canela to São Francisco de Paula .
