Rota Romântica
The Rota Romântica , Portuguese for "Romantic Road" (German-speaking name), is a scenic tourist route that mainly leads through the hilly Serra Gaúcha in Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil . The area was settled mainly by German immigrants in the mid-19th century. Architecture as well as customs and gastronomy are reminiscent of the German past. The Riograndenser Hunsrückisch is still spoken in the smaller towns today .
The Rota Romântica from São Leopoldo to São Francisco de Paula is about 184 km long. It leads through the now 14 municipalities São Leopoldo , Novo Hamburgo , Estância Velha , Ivoti , Dois Irmãos , Morro Reuter , Santa Maria do Herval , Presidente Lucena , Picada Café , Nova Petrópolis , Gramado , Canela , São Francisco de Paula and Linha Nova .
The Região das Hortênsias was created as the tourist trademark of the cities of Nova Petrópolis, Gramado, Canela and São Francisco de Paula . This area is also the one with the highest influx of tourists. São Leopoldo and Novo Hamburgo are large and industrial cities. The other places are poorly developed, but very attractive due to their often untouched nature.
