Presidente Lucena is a municipality with 2,863 inhabitants (as of 2018) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil . It is located about 60 km north of Porto Alegre . Nearby are the places Picada Café , Morro Reuter , Ivoti , Lindolfo Collor and São José do Hortêncio . Originally Presidente Lucena was part of the Ivoti municipality.

history

From 1826, the second wave of German immigrants to Rio Grande do Sul brought the first immigrants to the area. The oldest places in the municipality are Linha Nova Baixa and Picada Schneider . Linha Nova Baixa was built around 1830, Picada Schneider in 1845, the village of Nova Vila , formerly Nova Alemanha , was not settled until after 1850. Today's Presidente Lucena, formerly Arroio Veado , came into being much later.

In 1885 the provincial government planned a route from São Leopoldo to Nova Petrópolis . The Picada (aisle) was created from 1888 on old Tropeiro paths, on which cattle were driven north. Later it was called Estrada Presidente Lucena , and it became usable for cars in 1913.

Agriculture

Small-scale agriculture still characterizes the region, as in the times of the colonies with mixed cultures. There are around 410 farms with an average of 10 hectares. In addition to horticulture, there is corn, sugar cane and acacia for extracting tannins for the leather industry. There is cattle, pig and chicken breeding.

Industry

Although Presidente Lucena is rural, there are many industries producing cement, lube colonial (jam as it is often used for Café Colonial ), textiles, furniture, fruit processing and liquor.

tourism

The main sights are the historic center of Picada Schneider, the iron bridge of Linha Nova Baixa over the Rio Cadeia and the Morro do Pedro with a height of 595 meters. Half-timbered houses are available in both historical and modern forms, such as the new Centro Administrativo . Even today, around 90% of Riograndens speak Hunsrückisch , German culture is cultivated and (culinary) marketed.
