Nahum Norbert Glatzer
Nahum Norbert Glatzer (born March 25, 1903 in Lemberg , Austria-Hungary ; died February 27, 1990 in Tucson , Arizona ) was an American rabbi .
Life
Glatzer studied in Frankfurt am Main, first at the Jeschiwa Breuer, then at the University of Oriental Studies, Philosophy and the History of Religion. In 1932 the doctorate to Dr. phil. From 1923 he held lectures on midrash and Bible exegesis at the Lehrhaus Frankfurt , then he taught Jewish religious history and ethics at the University of Frankfurt, succeeding Martin Buber .
In 1938 Glatzer fled from the National Socialists to Palestine . He later taught in the USA . From 1950 he was professor of Jewish history at Brandeis University in Boston , and from 1957 director of the Department of Semitic Studies.
From 1956 he was a member of the board of directors of the Leo Baeck Institute , New York and 1959–1960 Guggenheim Fellow . In 1976 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
He was a contributor to the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Encyclopaedia Judaica .
The American documentary filmmaker and art historian Judith Wechsler is his daughter.
