history
On July 25, 1824, the first 38 (or 126, according to another source) German immigrants reached the Feitoria , a no longer functioning state property, in the then so-called Colonia Alemã de São Leopoldo . The colony area ranged (today's city names) from Esteio in the south to Caxias do Sul in the north, from Taquara in the east to Porto dos Guimarães ( São Sebastião do Caí ) in the west. More waves of immigrants settled the region. They were considered to be very hardworking and not only worked as "farmers", but also as "craftsmen". By 1830, 3,700 immigrants had come. From 1835 to 1844 the colony got into the chaos of civil war and was almost wiped out. However, more people willing to emigrate were sought in Germany, and the Brazilian state gave them free passage, land (130 acres), seeds and money for the first two years. The city was founded on April 1, 1846, d. H. independent of Porto Alegre.
Economy and Transport
The artisanal production formed the core of an early industrialization with a wide range of production today. The Human Development Index (HDI) is 0.747 which is rated as high. The gross domestic product was 6.7 billion reais in 2014 , so São Leopoldo ranks ninth among the municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul.
Shortly before the turn of the millennium, the city was connected to the Trensurb suburban train network of Porto Alegre.

São Leopoldo is the seat of the renowned Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (Unisinos). It has won several awards as the best privately owned university in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and one of the best private universities nationwide.
