Microregion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a micro-region one is geographic or political unity of cities and municipalities designated.

Brazil

In Brazil the term microregion is used in a geostatistical context. As a translation of the Portuguese word microrregião ("small area"), according to the Brazilian constitution from 1988, a microregion is a collection of neighboring municipalities or cities. These do not necessarily have to be politically related. Rather, it is commonalities in social and economic terms that lead to a defined unit as a micro-region.

Microregions are defined by the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in order to serve as support for its work and thus to have a better basis for planning and organizing various issues of public interest. In addition to the microregion, Brazil also has the mesoregion as a definition , an area serving the same purpose but larger that comprises several microregions.

The division into micro-regions was in effect from 1988 to 2017, then they were replaced by Região geográfica imediata as the IBGE system.
